Gurungche Hill

The high point above Bandipur — a short forest climb to a ridge with sunset views and a wide Himalaya panorama.

Address
Gurungche Hill, Bandipur, Tanahun, Gandaki Province

Gurungche Hill is the forested high point on the ridge above Bandipur, reached by a short climb that delivers the town's broadest outlook. From the open top you look down over the bazaar and surrounding valleys and, on a clear day, out to a long sweep of the Himalaya — making it a favourite spot for both sunset and sunrise, and at times a take-off point for paragliding. If you only have the legs for one climb above town, this is the one that repays the effort most generously.

What to expect

The path leaves the town and climbs through forest for around thirty to forty-five minutes. It is steeper than the flat walk to Tundikhel but stays short, with shade most of the way and steadily widening views. The woodland is part of what makes the climb pleasant — birdsong, dappled light and the occasional clearing — before the trees open at the summit onto the full panorama: terraced hillsides falling away, the highway valley below and the snow peaks beyond.

Because it is the highest of the easily reached viewpoints around town, Gurungche gives the most complete sense of Bandipur's setting, with the ridge, the bazaar and the surrounding valleys all laid out together. When weather and operators allow, the ridge doubles as a paragliding launch, with tandem flights drifting out over the valley — worth asking about locally, as availability shifts with the season and is never guaranteed.

Most walkers come for the light. Sunset paints the valleys gold and is the more relaxed option, since you climb in daylight; a pre-dawn climb is more effort but sets you up for the mountains at their crispest before the haze builds. Either way, allow a little extra time at the top to take it in.

Good to know

  • Cost: Free to climb; paragliding, if running, is paid separately through local operators.
  • What to bring: Comfortable shoes, water and a torch if walking up before dawn.
  • Best time: Late afternoon for sunset, early morning for the clearest Himalaya views.
  • Fitness: A short but steady forest climb; fine for most walkers with a couple of rests along the way.

How it fits your visit

Gurungche Hill is the natural step up from the easier viewpoints in town. Combine it with the flat Tundikhel promenade for an early stroll, the longer walk to Ramkot's Magar village, or a quieter stop at the Bandipur Silk Farm. For the classic dawn outing, many still climb to the Thani Mai sunrise viewpoint and return to the car-free Newari bazaar.
