Things to do in Kirtipur
A Newari hilltop town about 8km southwest of central Kathmandu, famous for its medieval temples, brick-paved old alleys and renowned Newa cuisine, with Tribhuvan University on its slopes.
Kirtipur is a historic Newari hilltop town about 8km southwest of central Kathmandu, perched on a twin-humped ridge at roughly 1,400m. It is one of the Kathmandu Valley's oldest settlements and, despite its closeness to the capital, keeps a remarkably intact medieval character — steep brick-paved alleys, carved windows, temple courtyards and a strong, proud Newar identity. For travellers tired of crowds, it offers living heritage and superb food without the entry fees of the durbar squares.
Most visitors climb to the temple-crowned summits. The Hindu Bagh Bhairab Temple is the town's spiritual heart, while the smaller Uma Maheshwar Temple sits at the highest point with valley views and stone elephants guarding its steps. On the southern hill, the white Buddhist Chilancho Stupa reflects Kirtipur's blend of Hindu and Buddhist faith. Between them wind the Layku old town alleys, where weavers still work traditional Newar handlooms. On the lower slopes spreads the campus of Tribhuvan University, Nepal's oldest and largest.
Kirtipur is also a food destination. The old town is one of the best places in the valley to eat authentic Newa cuisine — from chatamari and bara to spiced buffalo dishes and local rice beer.
