Karnali Province, Nepal
Rara Travel Guide
The deep-blue heart of Nepal's far west — Rara Lake, the country's largest, set inside the pristine pine forests of Rara National Park in remote Mugu, Karnali.
Rara is the deep-blue jewel of Nepal's far west — a remote corner of Mugu district in Karnali Province built around Rara Lake, the largest lake in the country. Ringed by pine, spruce and juniper forest and protected within compact Rara National Park, it is one of the most pristine and least-visited landscapes Nepal has to offer. Reaching it takes effort, but few places feel so untouched.
The lake sits at around 3,000m, its clear water shifting from emerald to deep blue as the light moves across the surrounding ridges. Days here are spent slowly: boating on Rara Lake, walking the forest shore, and climbing to the two great viewpoints — Murma Top on the northern side and Chuchemara Danda to the south, the highest point in the park. The forests shelter rare wildlife, and a patient hiker may glimpse a red panda or Himalayan musk deer. For a fuller list, browse our best things to do in Rara collection.
Getting here is half the adventure. There is no direct route: you fly via Nepalgunj to Talcha or Jumla, then continue through the district headquarters of Gamgadhi by road or on foot — see how to get to Rara, the Gamgadhi and Talcha gateways and the trekking-focused Rara Lake trek and circuit. Frequently asked questions
Where is Rara in Nepal?+
Rara is in Mugu district, deep in Karnali Province in Nepal's remote far west. Its centrepiece is Rara Lake, the largest lake in the country, set inside Rara National Park well away from the usual Kathmandu and Pokhara routes.
How do you get to Rara?+
Most travellers fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, then take a small connecting flight to the Talcha airstrip near the lake or to Jumla, followed by a short drive via Gamgadhi or a one- to three-day trek. The overland route is long and rough.
What is there to do at Rara?+
Boat or walk the shore of Rara Lake, hike to the Murma Top and Chuchemara Danda viewpoints for panoramas over the water, and explore the pine forests of Rara National Park, home to red panda and Himalayan musk deer.
How many days do you need at Rara?+
Allow at least three to four days at the lake to enjoy the viewpoints and a full loop of the shore, plus buffer days for weather-dependent flights. A classic trek in from Jumla adds several more days each way.
When is the best time to visit Rara?+
Autumn (September to November) and spring (April to May) give the clearest skies, settled weather and reliable flights. Winter is cold with snow on the ridges, while the monsoon disrupts the small mountain flights and trails.
