Murma Top Viewpoint
The classic grassy ridge viewpoint above Rara Lake, with sweeping panoramas over Nepal's largest lake.
Murma Top is the classic viewpoint at Rara — a broad, grassy ridge on the northern side of the lake that delivers the postcard panorama down over Rara Lake, Nepal's largest. Named for the nearby village of Murma, it is the single most rewarding short hike in the area and a fixture on every visit to Rara.
What to expect
The walk up climbs steadily from the lakeshore through pine and rhododendron forest before breaking out onto open meadow near 3,500m. From the top the whole sweep of the deep-blue lake lies below you, framed by forested ridges, with distant Himalayan peaks rising to the north on clear days. It is the best spot at Rara for sunrise, when the water is mirror-still and the light long.
The viewpoint sits above the small settlement of Murma, one of the traditional villages on the northern fringe of the park, and the path passes through grazing meadows where horses and livestock are sometimes out on the slopes. In spring the forest below is bright with rhododendron, while autumn brings the sharpest, haze-free views after the monsoon has cleared. Because the climb is short and the gradient gentle, Murma Top is the most accessible of the two great viewpoints at Rara and the one most visitors prioritise.
The hike
The trail begins at the lakeshore and gains a few hundred metres over a couple of hours, switching between shaded forest and open pasture. It is not technical, but the thin air near 3,500m means a steady, unhurried pace pays off. Most walkers start before dawn to reach the ridge for sunrise, then descend in time for a late breakfast back at the lake — a half-day outing in total. Carry water, snacks and warm layers, as the ridge can be cold and windy even when the lakeshore is calm, and a local guide is easy to arrange and helps with the unmarked sections of trail.
For photographers, the early light is everything: the lake turns from grey to gold to deep blue as the sun lifts over the eastern ridges, and the calm dawn water mirrors the surrounding forest. It is comfortably the finest photographic vantage point at Rara, and a highlight of the best things to do in Rara.
Good to know
- Timing: Allow a half-day round trip from the lake; set off early for the clearest skies and calmest water.
- Altitude: The ridge tops out around 3,500m, so pace yourself and carry warm layers and water.
- Pair it with: For the higher, harder panorama from the opposite shore, hike Chuchemara Danda, and see how both rank in the country's best viewpoints in Nepal.
