Bandipur Bazaar, Tanahun, Gandaki Province

Bandipur Bazaar is the town's car-free Newari main street, a flagstone lane lined with old merchant houses whose carved windows and shuttered fronts now shelter cafes, shops and guesthouses. It is the heart of Bandipur — the place where the town's trading past is most visible and where most of a visit naturally unfolds.

What to expect

With no traffic on the central strip, the bazaar invites slow wandering. You can read the architecture in the carved timber and brick facades, duck into small shrines tucked between the houses, and pause at a cafe table as the day goes by. Bougainvillea spills over the walls, and at sunset the square comes alive with travellers and locals alike.

Good to know

  • Cost: Free to walk; you only pay for food, drinks or shopping.
  • Best time: Late afternoon into sunset, when the light is soft and the street is at its liveliest.
  • Nearby: From the bazaar it's a short uphill walk to the sunrise viewpoint at Thani Mai temple, and a longer downhill hike to Siddha Gufa cave. See how they fit together in our guide to the best things to do in Bandipur.

Frequently asked questions

What is Bandipur Bazaar?+

It's the town's main street — a car-free row of traditional Newari merchant houses with carved wooden windows, now home to cafes, shops and guesthouses. Once a busy trading post, it has kept its old character and is the heart of any visit.

Is Bandipur's main street really car-free?+

Yes. The central bazaar is closed to traffic, so you can stroll the flagstone street freely. Vehicles park at the edges of town, leaving the main strip to pedestrians, cafe tables and the occasional flower-filled courtyard.

What is there to do in the bazaar?+

Wander the lane to see the old houses and shrines, browse small shops, and settle into a cafe for coffee or Newari food. Sunset is the liveliest time, when the bougainvillea glows and the square fills with travellers.

Do you need to pay to visit the bazaar?+

No — walking the bazaar is free. You'll only spend on food, drinks or shopping, and most cafes and guesthouses are reasonably priced for what is one of the most atmospheric streets in Nepal.
