Phaplu Travel Guide
A green Sherpa town in lower Solukhumbu with its own airstrip, Phaplu is a quieter, lower-altitude gateway to the Everest region — a base for Chiwong Monastery, the Pikey Peak trek, Junbesi village and the Numbur Cheese Circuit.
Phaplu is a green Sherpa town in Solukhumbu district, set among forested ridges at around 2,470 metres in the lower "Solu" part of the Everest region. With its own small airstrip and a long history as a district hub, it is the quieter, lower-altitude back door to the Khumbu — a place to ease into the mountains slowly, surrounded by terraced fields, pine forest and Buddhist culture rather than the crowds and thin air of Lukla and Namche.
The town and its surroundings are rich in things to see. The hilltop Chiwong Monastery clings to a cliff above Phaplu and hosts the spectacular masked-dance Mani Rimdu festival each autumn, while the serene Thubten Choling Monastery shelters a large community of monks and nuns in a quiet valley north of town. A short walk away, the postcard Sherpa village of Junbesi charms with whitewashed houses, apple orchards and a fine gompa. The nearby district headquarters at Salleri is the practical hub for transport, supplies and services. For the full list, see our pick of the top things to do in Phaplu.
Phaplu is above all a gateway to the high country and to gentle Solu treks. From here the celebrated Pikey Peak trek climbs ridgelines to a summit that the late Sir Edmund Hillary called his favourite Everest viewpoint, while the Numbur Cheese Circuit loops through high yak pastures and cheese-making kharkas beneath Numbur peak. The classic low-route walk-in to Everest Base Camp also starts here. For wider context, read the national Everest region treks overview and the dedicated Pikey Peak trek guide.

Frequently asked questions
Where is Phaplu and how high is it?+
Phaplu sits at around 2,470 metres in Solukhumbu district, in the green lower 'Solu' part of the Everest region, south-west of the high Khumbu. It is reached by a short flight from Kathmandu or a long jeep ride, and is much lower and milder than Namche or Lukla.
Why visit Phaplu instead of Lukla?+
Phaplu is a quieter, gentler and cheaper gateway to the Everest region. Its airstrip sees far less traffic than Lukla, the country is green and forested rather than high and barren, and it gives access to culturally rich trails like Pikey Peak, Junbesi and the Numbur Cheese Circuit at lower, safer altitudes.
What is there to do in Phaplu?+
Visit the hilltop Chiwong Monastery, famed for its autumn Mani Rimdu festival, walk to the beautiful Sherpa village of Junbesi and the quiet retreat of Thubten Choling Monastery, explore the district headquarters at Salleri, and set off on the Pikey Peak trek for one of Nepal's finest Everest viewpoints.
Can you trek to Everest Base Camp from Phaplu?+
Yes — Phaplu is the start of the classic low-route walk-in to the Khumbu. Trekkers walk several days north through Solu, Ringmo and the Trakshindo La toward Lukla and on to Everest Base Camp, gaining altitude gradually for a slower, more scenic and better-acclimatised approach.
Do you need a permit for Phaplu?+
Phaplu town and the Solu treks like Pikey Peak need the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit; continuing into the high Khumbu also requires Sagarmatha National Park entry. Carry passport copies and cash for fees, as there are few ATMs in the region.
