Pikey Peak Trek from Phaplu

A short, scenic ridge trek from Phaplu to a 4,065m summit with a sweeping Everest panorama, named Hillary's favourite.

The Pikey Peak trek from Phaplu is a short, scenic ridge walk to a 4,065-metre summit with one of the finest Everest panoramas in all of Nepal — a view that the late Sir Edmund Hillary is famously said to have ranked among his favourite places to see Everest. Starting from the green Sherpa country around Phaplu, it climbs through forest, pasture and villages to a dawn vista that takes in Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga and Numbur — all at a low, accessible altitude.

The short answer

Begin near Phaplu or Dhap, both reachable by flight into Phaplu or a long jeep ride from Kathmandu, and walk up to the Pikey Peak ridge over a few days. The trek is moderate and non-technical, taking roughly three to six days, and is famed for its sunrise Himalayan horizon. For the full route detail, see the dedicated national Pikey Peak trek guide.

The route

From the Phaplu area the trail climbs through rhododendron and pine forest, past mani walls, chortens and Sherpa and Tamang villages, gaining height steadily toward the ridge. Many itineraries pass close to the beautiful village of Junbesi and the Solu valleys, blending culture with scenery. The final approach to the summit is an early-morning climb timed for sunrise, when the peaks glow and the panorama is at its sharpest.

The view

The reason to climb Pikey is the summit panorama. On a clear morning the horizon unfurls from Kanchenjunga in the east, across Makalu, Everest and Lhotse, to Numbur, Gaurishankar and beyond — a sweep of the eastern Himalaya rarely matched from such an accessible vantage point. It is this view that earned the peak its association with Hillary and its growing fame.

Difficulty and altitude

At 4,065 metres Pikey is high enough to feel the altitude but far below the demanding passes of the Khumbu, and there is no technical climbing. Even so, take the ascent steadily and read the national guide to altitude sickness in Nepal before you go. A reasonable level of fitness and proper warm layers for the cold, exposed summit are essential.

Combine it

Pikey pairs naturally with the longer Numbur Cheese Circuit and with the low walk-in toward the Khumbu — see the Everest region treks overview. Time it well using the best time to visit Phaplu.
