Salleri Bazaar

The district headquarters of Solukhumbu beside Phaplu — the main bazaar for transport, supplies and services.

Salleri is the administrative headquarters of Solukhumbu district, a busy bazaar town set just below and beside Phaplu in the green lower Solu hills. While Phaplu has the airstrip and the monasteries, Salleri has the government offices, banks, main market and road head — making the two adjoining settlements the practical centre of the lower Everest region and the place to sort logistics before heading into the mountains.

What to expect

Salleri is more a working town than a tourist sight, but it is useful and full of everyday life. The bazaar lines a sloping main street with shops selling food, trekking supplies and household goods, alongside government offices, schools and local eateries. It is the best place in the region to stock up, withdraw cash and arrange transport, and a good window onto the rhythm of Solu life — farmers, traders, officials and trekkers all passing through.

Because reliable ATMs are scarce once you leave the road head, read the national guide to money and ATMs in Nepal and carry enough cash for your whole trek.

Salleri and Phaplu together

Salleri and Phaplu sit close together on adjoining ridges, a short walk or drive apart, and function as a pair: Phaplu for the airport and monasteries, Salleri for administration and supplies. Most travellers pass through Salleri whether they fly into Phaplu or arrive overland by jeep — see how to get to Phaplu for the routes.

Using Salleri as a base

For trekkers, Salleri is the logistics hub for the Solu region. It is where the long jeep road from Kathmandu ends, where you can hire porters or guides, finalise permits and buy last-minute gear before walking out toward Junbesi, Chiwong Monastery or the Pikey ridge. Allow a little time here at the start or end of a trek.

Good to know

  • Cash: Bank and ATM access here, but unreliable; carry rupees for the trek.
  • Nearby: Combine with the Phaplu airport and plan transport with the national guide to getting around Nepal.
