Beni Bazaar

Myagdi's busy roadhead market at the meeting of two rivers, and the trailhead for the western hills.

Beni Bazaar is the market heart of Beni, the headquarters of Myagdi district, set at around 830 metres where the Myagdi Khola meets the Kali Gandaki. It is a classic Himalayan roadhead — the place where the road network frays into rough mountain tracks and the great trekking routes begin — and its riverside market hums with the trade of the surrounding hills.

What to expect

The bazaar strings along the rivers in a tight valley, a busy, unpolished town of shops, lodges, jeep stands and produce stalls. Watch four-wheel-drives load up for the climb into the hills, porters shoulder loads for the trails, and farmers bring down hill produce to sell. There is little in the way of monuments here — the appeal is the energy of working Nepal and the dramatic setting between two rivers.

Frequently asked questions

What is Beni Bazaar?+

Beni Bazaar is the main market and town centre of Beni, the headquarters of Myagdi district. It sits at the confluence of the Myagdi Khola and the Kali Gandaki at around 830 metres, and serves as the roadhead and trading hub for the surrounding hill villages and trekking routes.

What can you do in Beni Bazaar?+

Wander the riverside market, watch jeeps and porters load for the hills, stock up on trekking supplies, and soak up the workmanlike energy of a Himalayan roadhead. The bazaar is also the jumping-off point for Galeshwor Dham, the Tatopani hot springs and the Dhaulagiri and Dhorpatan trails.

Is Beni Bazaar worth visiting?+

As a destination in itself it's modest, but as a slice of working hill-Nepal it's genuinely interesting, and most travellers pass through anyway. Its setting between two rivers in a deep valley, and its role as a mountain gateway, give it real character.

Where is Beni Bazaar?+

Beni Bazaar lies in Myagdi district in Gandaki Province, west of Pokhara, where the Myagdi Khola joins the Kali Gandaki. It is reached by road via Kushma in Parbat, and is the last major bazaar before the rough mountain roads to Dhaulagiri, Dhorpatan and Jomsom.
