A jungle safari is the heart of any Chitwan trip — the best way to track one-horned rhinos, deer, crocodiles and, if you're lucky, a Bengal tiger across the park's grasslands and sal forest. Most travellers go by jeep, with guided walking safaris for the more adventurous.
Best time to go
Head out in the early morning or late afternoon, when animals are most active and the heat is bearable. Wildlife viewing is best from October to March, when shorter grass makes spotting easier.
Good to know
- Safaris and licensed guides are arranged in Sauraha; wear neutral colours and bring water.
- Pair it with a quieter canoe trip on the Rapti River, or plan the rest with the best things to do in Chitwan.

Frequently asked questions
How long is a jungle safari in Chitwan?+
A half-day jeep safari runs about 4–5 hours, while full-day safaris cover more remote parts of the park. Guided walking safaris are shorter and more intimate but get closer to wildlife on foot.
Will I see a rhino or tiger on a Chitwan safari?+
One-horned rhinos, deer and crocodiles are seen on most safaris, especially in the cooler, drier months. Tigers are present but elusive, so a sighting is a lucky bonus rather than a guarantee.
