Chatara on the Koshi

A sacred Koshi riverside town near Dharan, gateway to the Barahakshetra pilgrimage and holy river bathing.

Chatara is a sacred riverside town on the mighty Saptakoshi (Koshi), around 15 to 20 kilometres from Dharan and one of eastern Nepal's most important places of pilgrimage. People come to bathe in the holy waters where the river spreads out from the hills, and to visit the revered Barahakshetra temple nearby.

What to expect

The setting is wide and elemental — the great Koshi, broad gravel banks and the temples and ghats that draw pilgrims year-round. This is one of the points where the Saptakoshi, gathered from seven rivers draining the eastern Himalaya, emerges from the hills onto the plains, and that transition gives the place its sacred power. Worshippers come to bathe, perform last rites and offer prayers, and the riverside has a timeless, ceremonial atmosphere.

The biggest day is Maghe Sankranti in mid-January, when huge crowds gather for ritual bathing in the cold winter waters and the riverside fills with stalls, music and worshippers. It is one of eastern Nepal's great pilgrimage gatherings, and the whole area takes on a festival air for days.

Barahakshetra

A short distance from the riverside stands Barahakshetra, one of the four most important kshetra pilgrimage sites in Nepal, dedicated to Vishnu in his boar (Varaha) incarnation. The temple anchors the area's sacred reputation and is the spiritual goal of many who travel to Chatara. Together, the river and the temple make this a half-day pilgrimage that complements Dharan's hilltop shrines and offers a very different, water-and-plains side of the region's devotion.
