Namobuddha Hike from Dhulikhel

The classic walk from Dhulikhel to sacred Namobuddha monastery via the thousand steps.

The hike from Dhulikhel to Namobuddha is the town's signature day out — a moderate 10 to 12 kilometre walk through terraced hills and villages to one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Nepal. The final approach climbs the long stone stairway known as the thousand steps, leading up to the hilltop stupa and the large Thrangu Tashi Yangtse monastery that crowns the ridge.

The short answer

Walk southeast from Dhulikhel via Kavre Bhagwati and Phulbari to Namobuddha — about three to four hours one way, finishing with the climb of the thousand steps to the monastery. It is moderate, with rolling ups and downs rather than a single climb, and you can return by road or continue on to Panauti.

What you'll see

Namobuddha marks the spot where, in a famous Jataka legend, a prince who would become the Buddha in a later life offered his own body to a starving tigress and her cubs. Today a stupa, prayer flags and the bustling Thrangu monastery make it both a pilgrimage site and a peaceful place to pause. The walk itself passes farmland, forest and small Buddhist shrines with Himalayan views on clear days.

Good to know

  • Start early to allow for the distance and the stair climb, and to beat afternoon haze.
  • Carry water and snacks; teahouses are spread out along the way.
  • Dress modestly and walk clockwise around the stupa out of respect.
