Best Time to Visit Gorkha
Autumn and spring bring clear Himalayan views and mild weather — a season guide to Gorkha's skies, festivals and climbs.
The best time to visit Gorkha is autumn — roughly October and November — when the skies clear after the monsoon, the Himalayan views are at their sharpest and the weather is mild for the steep Durbar climb. Spring, from March to April, is the strong second choice. Winter is cold but clear, and the monsoon is lush but hazy and wet. Whatever the season, the early morning is always the best window for the ridge.
Autumn (October–November): the top season
This is the prime time. The monsoon has washed the air clean, so the Manaslu and Himalchuli peaks stand out crisply from Upallokot viewpoint. Days are mild, the trails are dry and the major festival of Dashain brings the town's temples, including the Gorakhkali Temple, vividly to life. Expect more visitors than usual, though Gorkha stays quiet by national standards.
Spring (March–April): warm and green
Spring is warm and pleasant, with rhododendrons and fresh growth on the hillsides. Mountain views are good if not quite as reliable as autumn, as haze can build by midday — another reason to climb early. It is an excellent second choice if autumn does not suit your dates.
Summer monsoon (June–September): lush but wet
The hills turn brilliantly green, but heavy rain, haze and cloud often hide the peaks, and the stone steps grow slippery. If you visit now, climb at dawn before the afternoon downpours and accept that the big views may not appear.
Winter (December–February): clear and quiet
Winter days are cool and frequently clear, giving excellent mountain visibility and the fewest crowds. Mornings on the exposed ridge are cold, so bring warm layers for an early start and for high viewpoints.

Festivals and timing
The single most atmospheric time to be in Gorkha is during Dashain, the great autumn festival, when the town's temples — above all the Gorakhkali Temple — come alive with offerings, music and crowds of worshippers. It conveniently overlaps with the clearest skies of the year, so you get both the sharpest mountain views and the liveliest cultural scene at once. The trade-off is that transport and lodgings fill up, so book ahead. If you would rather have the ridge largely to yourself, the quieter weeks of late autumn or clear winter days deliver almost the same views with a fraction of the people.
Tips
- Climb at sunrise in any season for the clearest peaks before haze builds.
- Pack layers for cold mornings on the ridge, especially in winter.
- Time it with Dashain in autumn to see the town's temples at their liveliest.
- Book ahead for festival dates, when rooms and transport fill quickly.
