Monasteries and Gompas of Helambu

Atmospheric Hyolmo Buddhist monasteries and hilltop gompas in the villages of Helambu.

Helambu holds some of the most atmospheric Buddhist monasteries and gompas within reach of Kathmandu, the spiritual fabric of the Hyolmo homeland. From the old gompa at Tarkeghyang to the hilltop temple above Sermathang, nearly every village on the ridge has its own monastery, chortens and mani walls.

What to see

The Hyolmo follow Tibetan Buddhism of the Nyingma and Kagyu traditions, and their gompas are rich with painted murals, butter-lamp shrines and statues. Prayer flags string the ridgelines, and revolving prayer wheels and carved mani stones line the village paths. Walking village-to-village through Helambu is effectively a gentle pilgrimage, deeply connected to the Hyolmo culture that sustains these temples.

Inside the larger gompas you will find vivid wall paintings depicting Buddhas, bodhisattvas and protector deities, rows of butter lamps, and shelves of scripture wrapped in cloth. Many monasteries are still active centres of worship rather than museums, so you may hear monks chanting or see villagers spinning prayer wheels and offering lamps. The architecture itself is part of the appeal: thick stone walls, ornate carved and painted woodwork, and rooftops crowned with golden finials that catch the mountain light.

Highlights

  • The Tarkeghyang gompa, the most revered in the region.
  • The hilltop monastery and chortens above Sermathang.
  • Mani walls, prayer wheels and roadside chortens throughout the valley.
  • Festival days, when the gompas come alive with masked dances and ritual.

Visiting respectfully

  • Remove shoes and dress modestly before entering a gompa.
  • Walk clockwise around chortens, prayer wheels and shrines.
  • Ask before photographing interiors or monks; a small donation toward upkeep is welcome.

Best time and how to plan

Festival days are the most rewarding time to visit, though they fall on the lunar calendar and shift each year, so ask locally or through an agency when planning. Outside festivals the gompas are quiet and contemplative, and a caretaker or monk can often open the main hall on request. Autumn and spring give the clearest weather for walking between the monastery villages; see the best time to visit Helambu.

The old gompa at Tarkeghyang is the most revered, as the village is the spiritual heart of the Hyolmo homeland. Sermathang and other ridge villages also have handsome monasteries and chortens, so a village-to-village walk in Helambu is effectively a pilgrimage route.

Can visitors enter the gompas in Helambu?+

Yes — most village gompas welcome respectful visitors. Remove your shoes, dress modestly, walk clockwise around chortens and prayer wheels, ask before photographing interiors or monks, and a small donation toward upkeep is appreciated.

What kind of Buddhism is practised in Helambu?+

The Hyolmo people follow Tibetan Buddhism, mainly of the Nyingma and Kagyu traditions, brought by their Tibetan ancestors. You will see the same prayer flags, mani walls, chortens and butter-lamp shrines found across the Himalayan Buddhist world.
