Sandakpur Ridge
Ilam's high border ridge with a sweeping Kanchenjunga 'Sleeping Buddha' panorama, reached by trek or jeep.
Sandakpur is the high border ridge above Ilam, celebrated for one of the finest long-range views of the Kanchenjunga massif — the "Sleeping Buddha" skyline that lies along the horizon like a reclining figure. At around 3,600 metres on the Nepal-India frontier, it is the loftiest and most ambitious outing in the district, reached either by a scenic multi-day trek or a rugged jeep road.
What to expect
The route climbs through hill villages, terraced fields and rhododendron forest that blazes red and pink in spring. The reward at the top is an immense panorama: the Kanchenjunga group dominates the skyline, and on exceptionally clear mornings far-off Everest can be picked out to the west. The ridge is cool and exposed, so nights are cold, but a dawn here is among the great mountain views in eastern Nepal.
The ridge straddles the Nepal-India border and shares the same high country as the popular Sandakphu trek on the Indian side. From the top the eye runs along an unbroken wall of peaks, with Kanchenjunga — the world's third-highest mountain — at its centre. The "Sleeping Buddha" name comes from the way the connected summits resemble a reclining figure when seen from here. Simple lodges and teahouses near the ridge provide basic food and a bed, but facilities are minimal, so come prepared for a rustic, high-hill experience.
Trek or jeep
There are two ways up. A multi-day trek lets you walk in gradually through forest and villages, which is the more rewarding and altitude-friendly approach. A four-wheel-drive jeep can grind up the rough road for those short on time, though the track is bumpy and weather-dependent. Either way, plan to overnight near the ridge so you are in place for sunrise rather than racing up in the dark.
Good to know
- Access: Trek over several days or take a four-wheel-drive jeep on a rough road; either way, overnight near the ridge for sunrise.
- Altitude: At roughly 3,600 m the air is thin and cold — pack warm layers and ascend at a sensible pace.
- Season: October to December and March to April are best; spring adds rhododendron blooms.
- Facilities: Lodging and food near the ridge are basic, so carry essentials and don't expect comforts.

Frequently asked questions
What is Sandakpur known for?+
Sandakpur is a high ridge on the Nepal-India border above Ilam, famous for one of the best long-range views of the Kanchenjunga massif — the 'Sleeping Buddha' skyline. On the clearest days, distant Everest can also be glimpsed far to the west.
How do you reach Sandakpur from Ilam?+
Sandakpur is reached by a multi-day trek through villages and rhododendron forest, or by rugged four-wheel-drive jeep on a rough mountain road. Many travellers start from Maipokhari or the Ilam side and overnight near the ridge for sunrise.
Is the Sandakpur trek difficult?+
It is a moderate hill trek rather than a high-altitude expedition, but the ridge climbs to around 3,600 metres, so it is cool and the road is rough. Reasonable fitness, warm clothing and a flexible schedule for weather are advisable.
When is the best time to visit Sandakpur?+
October to December and March to April give the clearest mountain views and stable trails. Spring also brings blooming rhododendrons. The monsoon is cloudy and slippery, and winter is very cold but can be exceptionally clear.
