Kakani Day Hike from Kathmandu

A scenic ridge-and-forest day hike linking Kakani's views with Shivapuri and Budhanilkantha.

The Kakani day hike from Kathmandu is one of the most rewarding easy walks near the capital, pairing a ridge-top Himalayan panorama with shady forest trails that drop toward Shivapuri and Budhanilkantha. It is a moderate outing rather than a trek, which makes it a favourite for a half- or full-day escape from the city. For the wider menu of options, see our guide to the best day hikes near Kathmandu.

The route

A common plan is to drive up to Kakani for sunrise at the Kakani Himalaya viewpoint, then walk down through pine and oak forest toward the Shivapuri ridge and on to Budhanilkantha on the Kathmandu side. Strong walkers reverse it and climb up from Budhanilkantha. Either way, you trade a few hundred metres of elevation on village and forest paths, with the mountains at your back.

Difficulty and timing

  • Difficulty: moderate — manageable for most reasonably fit walkers in good shoes.
  • Time: roughly four to six hours of walking plus stops.
  • Best season: autumn and winter for clear views; see the best time to visit Kakani.

What the walk is like

The appeal of this hike is variety in a short distance. The high ground gives open ridge views over the Ganesh Himal and Langtang, then the trail dips into pine and oak forest alive with birdsong, passing through small hill villages and terraced fields before it reaches the valley edge. The Shivapuri side is part of a protected national park, so the forest is in good condition and the air is noticeably fresh. It is a walk that rewards a relaxed pace — there is no summit to bag, just a steady, scenic descent (or ascent) with plenty to look at.

Variations

You can shorten the day by being dropped at Kakani and walking only the most scenic forest section, or extend it by combining the route with time at the ridge memorials and farms beforehand. Strong, early-starting walkers sometimes link it with other day hikes near Kathmandu on the Shivapuri massif. Whichever version you choose, treat it as a half- to full-day outing rather than a race.

Good to know

  • Routes entering Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park need the park entry ticket — carry cash.
  • Carry water and snacks; services on the trail are limited.
  • Reward yourself with a trout lunch on the ridge before heading back.
  • Wear shoes with grip — forest paths can be slick after rain.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Kakani hike difficult?+

It is a moderate day hike rather than a strenuous trek. The main effort is the descent or climb of a few hundred metres between the ridge and the Kathmandu side, on forest and village trails. A reasonable level of fitness and decent shoes are enough.

How long is the Kakani day hike?+

Depending on the route, walking time is typically around four to six hours, plus stops for views and lunch. Many people drive up to Kakani for the views and walk down toward Shivapuri or Budhanilkantha, or do it the other way around.

Do you need a permit to hike at Kakani?+

The open ridge does not require a permit, but routes that enter Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park need the park's entry ticket. Carry cash for the fee and check current rules before you go, especially if walking in from the Budhanilkantha side.

Can you hike Kakani as a day trip from Kathmandu?+

Yes — its closeness to the city makes it ideal for a day hike. Set off early for clear morning mountain views, walk the ridge and forest trails, have a trout lunch, and be back in Kathmandu by evening.
