Battisputali, Kathmandu

Dwarika's Hotel is Kathmandu's best-known heritage luxury hotel, set in the quiet Battisputali district near the Pashupatinath temple complex. It began as one man's effort to rescue carved Newari woodwork from demolished buildings, and the result is a hotel that doubles as a living museum of the Kathmandu Valley's craft.

A hotel built around rescued woodcarving

Founder Dwarika Das Shrestha spent decades collecting Newari woodcarvings — windows, struts, pillars and doors salvaged from old buildings — and integrated them into the hotel's brick courtyards. The architecture is the main event: terracotta-tiled roofs, latticed windows and shaded inner courts that feel centuries old rather than modern.
