The Barun Valley

A glacier-carved gorge of waterfalls, forest and high pasture below Makalu — the scenic heart of the national park.

The Barun Valley is the scenic heart of the Makalu region — a deep, glacier-carved gorge below the south face of Makalu, drained by the rushing Barun river. Hung with waterfalls, cloaked in rhododendron and conifer forest and opening into high summer pastures, it is the corridor every trekker follows to reach the foot of the world's fifth-highest peak.

What to expect

The valley reveals itself slowly. After crossing the high Shipton La and Keke La passes from Tashigaon, the Makalu Base Camp trek descends into the upper Barun, where the trail threads between sheer rock walls streaked with cascades. Pastures such as Yangle Kharka and Langmale Kharka — grazed by yaks through the summer — make natural camps, and the peaks of Makalu, Chamlang and Baruntse rise ever higher as you climb toward base camp.

Because the whole valley lies within the Makalu Barun National Park, the forest and wildlife are remarkably intact. Walkers regularly see Himalayan tahr on the crags and, with luck and patience, the red panda that haunt the temperate woods lower down.

Why it matters

The Barun is one of the most pristine valleys in the Nepal Himalaya, protected since the early 1990s and still free of roads or development. That combination of high-mountain grandeur and untouched ecology is exactly what draws self-reliant trekkers willing to make the long journey east.
