Address
Kagbeni, Mustang, Gandaki Province

Kagbeni is a medieval mud-brick village strung along the Kali Gandaki at the threshold of Upper Mustang. A warren of narrow alleys, irrigation channels and prayer walls winds between an old crumbling fort and a Tibetan Buddhist monastery, while green barley terraces stand out against the bare ochre cliffs all around.

What to expect

The village rewards slow wandering. Duck through the low passages between mud-walled houses, find the ochre-painted gompa, and look out for the carved guardian figures that watch over the lanes. At the northern edge sits the checkpoint marking the boundary of the restricted zone — the literal gateway to the desert kingdom beyond.

Good to know

  • Access: Kagbeni itself is in freely accessible Lower Mustang; only travellers heading north into Upper Mustang need the special permit, checked here.
  • Stay: A handful of teahouses and guesthouses make Kagbeni a pleasant overnight between Jomsom and Muktinath.
  • Nearby: Continue up to the sacred temple at Muktinath, or use Kagbeni as the launch point for the Upper Mustang trek into the restricted north.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Kagbeni?+

Kagbeni sits on the Kali Gandaki river in the Mustang district of Gandaki Province, between Jomsom and Muktinath. It marks the point where freely accessible Lower Mustang meets the restricted Upper Mustang region, and is the last major village before the checkpoint north.

Why is Kagbeni worth visiting?+

It is one of the best-preserved medieval villages in the region — a tight maze of mud-brick houses, irrigation channels and prayer walls around an old fort and a Tibetan Buddhist monastery. Set against bare cliffs and green barley fields, it feels centuries removed from the rest of Nepal.

Do you need a permit for Kagbeni?+

No restricted-area permit is needed to visit Kagbeni itself, which lies in Lower Mustang on the standard Annapurna permit. The special Upper Mustang permit is only checked at the village checkpoint when you continue north towards Lo Manthang. Confirm current rules before you travel.

How do you get to Kagbeni?+

Most travellers reach Kagbeni from Jomsom, a short jeep ride or half-day walk down the Kali Gandaki. Jomsom in turn is reached by flight from Pokhara or by jeep up the valley road, making Kagbeni an easy add-on to a Muktinath visit.
