Nagarkot Hikes & Viewpoints

Ridge walks, the view tower, the nature trail and stargazing — Nagarkot's best hikes and views.

If you want more than the famous sunrise, Nagarkot rewards walkers and stargazers with a cluster of trails and viewpoints all reachable from the ridge. Climb the view tower for the widest panorama, loop the nature trail through forest, descend the classic Changu Narayan path, take on the longer Dhulikhel ridge, drop east toward the Newar village of Nala, or stay up after dark for some of the clearest stargazing near Kathmandu. This collection gathers them all so you can plan a full ridge day rather than dash up and back.

The short answer

Start high and work down. The single best viewpoint is the Nagarkot View Tower, the highest accessible point on the ridge with a true 360-degree sweep of the Himalaya. For a short, gentle walk, follow the Nagarkot nature trail through pine and rhododendron forest. With a free morning, the easy downhill hike to Changu Narayan temple is the standout; for a bigger day, walk the high Nagarkot to Dhulikhel ridge hike or the quieter descent to Nala village. After dark, the ridge turns into one of the valley's best stargazing spots.

Viewpoints on the ridge

Nagarkot sits at about 2,195m on the eastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley, which is exactly why the views are so wide. The view tower opens an unobstructed circle from the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges in the west, across Langtang, Ganesh Himal and Dorje Lakpa, to the distant Everest range far to the east. Most travellers pair it with the famous dawn — read our dedicated Nagarkot sunrise guide to time the morning, and see more things to do in Nagarkot for the sunset point and the rest of the ridge. The walks

All the trails leave from the ridge and need no permit. The nature trail is the gentle option — a forest loop of an hour or two, good for a lazy afternoon. The Changu Narayan hike is the classic, dropping roughly 12 to 14 kilometres downhill to Nepal's oldest Hindu temple. For more distance and sustained mountain views, the Dhulikhel ridge hike runs south along the valley rim, while the Nala route heads east to a quiet Newar village with its own temples in Kavre. Where these sit among the capital's day walks is covered in our guide to the best day hikes near Kathmandu.

After dark

Few visitors realise that Nagarkot's altitude and distance from city light make it a fine place to look up. On clear, moonless nights from autumn to winter, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye — full details in our Nagarkot stargazing pin.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best hikes around Nagarkot?+

The classics are the easy downhill walk to Changu Narayan temple, the longer high ridge to Dhulikhel, and the quieter descent toward Nala village in Kavre. For a short stroll, the Nagarkot nature trail loops through pine and rhododendron forest below the ridge. All start from the Nagarkot ridge and need no permit.

Which Nagarkot viewpoint is best?+

The Nagarkot View Tower at the top of the ridge gives the widest, truly 360-degree Himalayan panorama. Many east-facing hotel terraces also have superb outlooks for sunrise, and the sunset point on the western side of the ridge is best in the evening light.

Can you go stargazing in Nagarkot?+

Yes — at 2,195m and away from city glow, Nagarkot has some of the darkest accessible night skies near Kathmandu. On clear, moonless post-monsoon and winter nights the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye from the ridge and the view tower.

Do you need a guide for Nagarkot hikes?+

Not for the main routes. The Changu Narayan trail is well-trodden and mostly downhill, the Dhulikhel ridge follows obvious tracks and road, and the nature trail is signposted. A guide helps only on the lesser-used village paths toward Nala or if you want history along the way.
