Nagarkot to Changunarayan trail, Bhaktapur 44600

The classic walk from Nagarkot is the downhill ridge hike to Changunarayan, an easy day trail that drops off the viewpoint ridge through villages and forest to one of the Kathmandu Valley's oldest temples. It pairs naturally with an early start after sunrise.

The route

From the Nagarkot ridge the path heads downhill for roughly three to four hours, ending at the Changunarayan temple — a UNESCO-listed site. From there, transport runs on to Bhaktapur or back to Kathmandu, so you don't have to climb back up.

Good to know

  • It's mostly downhill and beginner-friendly, but wear proper shoes and carry water.
  • Time your start for just after the Nagarkot sunrise while the air is cool and the views are sharp.

No — because it heads downhill from the ridge, it's one of the easier day hikes near Kathmandu and suits most fitness levels. Wear decent shoes for the trail and carry water, as shade and shops are limited.
