Nagarkot Sunset Point

The west-and-north-facing ridge spots where the Himalaya turn gold in the evening light.

Address
Nagarkot ridge, Bhaktapur 44600, Nepal

While sunrise gets the headlines, the Nagarkot sunset is the easier and arguably more atmospheric show — and you do not have to set an alarm for it. As the sun drops, the western light catches the snow peaks and washes them in alpenglow, a slow shift from gold to pink that you can watch with a hot drink in hand.

The short answer

Head to the open western and northern edges of the ridge in the late afternoon — the area near the Nagarkot View Tower is ideal, and many west-facing hotel terraces work just as well. Aim to be in place 30 to 40 minutes before sunset, which falls between about 5:15 pm in winter and 6:45 pm in summer.

Where to stand

The trick to a good Nagarkot sunset is an unobstructed horizon. Trees and buildings block the lower light, so look for the open clearings along the ridge crest. From here the peaks of Langtang, Ganesh Himal and the western ranges glow as the valley below sinks into shadow. The view tower platform, if it is still open, gives the cleanest sightlines of all.

Good to know

  • Sunset is simpler to plan than sunrise — just arrive in the afternoon and you are set.
  • Bring a warm layer; the temperature drops quickly once the sun is down.
  • Skies are clearest in autumn and spring; see the best time to visit Nagarkot for month-by-month notes.
  • After dark the ridge is quiet and the stars are excellent on a clear night, well away from city lights.

A classic Nagarkot plan is to arrive for sunset, stay overnight, and rise for sunrise, getting both ends of the day from the same ridge. Frequently asked questions

Where is the best sunset point in Nagarkot?+

The open western and northern edges of the ridge, including the area around the Nagarkot View Tower, catch the evening light best. Many west-facing hotel terraces also work well. The key is an unobstructed horizon so you can watch the alpenglow move across the peaks as the sun drops.

What time is sunset in Nagarkot?+

It ranges from roughly 5:15 pm in midwinter to about 6:45 pm in summer. Arrive 30 to 40 minutes early to settle in, as the most dramatic colour often comes in the minutes just before and after the sun touches the horizon.

Is sunset or sunrise better in Nagarkot?+

Both are worth it, and most visitors catch both on an overnight trip. Sunrise reaches further east toward Everest, while sunset bathes the peaks in warm alpenglow. Sunset is also easier to plan, since you simply arrive in the afternoon rather than rising before dawn.

Can you see the mountains at sunset in the monsoon?+

Often the ridge is clouded in the monsoon afternoons, but it can clear suddenly after rain for a brief, vivid sunset. Outside the monsoon, autumn and spring evenings give the most reliable views.
