The Dhulikhel–Namobuddha–Panauti Loop

A classic day hike past ridges and villages to sacred Namobuddha and medieval Panauti.

The Dhulikhel–Namobuddha–Panauti loop is one of the finest day hikes near Kathmandu — a walk that strings together a Himalayan sunrise town, a sacred Buddhist hill and a perfectly preserved medieval Newar town, all on quiet ridge trails. It's the traditional way pilgrims have reached Namobuddha for generations, and it turns the journey itself into the highlight.

The short answer

Start in Dhulikhel, walk the ridge 13km (3–4 hours) to Namobuddha, then descend to the medieval town of Panauti before catching transport back. It's a moderate day on clear trails, best in autumn, winter or spring. Stay overnight at the monastery to split it into two easy days.

The route

From Dhulikhel the trail climbs to a ridge and follows it south through farming villages, terraced fields and clusters of chortens and prayer flags, with Himalaya views on clear mornings. After three to four hours you reach the sacred hill of Namobuddha, crowned by Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery. From there a downhill path leads to Panauti, a serene medieval town at the meeting of two rivers, famous for its 15th-century Indreshwar Mahadev temple.

How to plan it

  • One long day: walk Dhulikhel → Namobuddha → Panauti, then take a bus or taxi back.
  • Two days: overnight at the Namobuddha monastery guesthouse for dawn prayers and sunrise, then walk down to Panauti the next day.
  • Walk it east to west as described, or reverse it; either way arrange your return from Panauti in advance.

What to bring

  • Water, snacks and sun protection — there are tea stops but plan for stretches between them.
  • Good walking shoes; the trail has steps and can be slick after rain.
  • A warm layer for early starts and the breezy ridge.
  • Cash in rupees for tea houses and the hill.

Good to know

This is a classic for good reason — accessible, scenic and rich in culture. It pairs perfectly with a visit to the Namobuddha Stupa and the tigress cave shrine at the high point.
