Chulu West

A 6,419 m snow trekking peak above the Annapurna Circuit, a strong acclimatiser before the Thorong La pass.

Chulu West, at 6,419 metres, is one of the higher and more rewarding snow trekking peaks above the Annapurna Circuit — a substantial glaciated climb that doubles as superb acclimatisation for the Thorong La. It ranks among the bigger Annapurna objectives in the trekking peaks of Nepal.

Overview

Chulu West rises in the Chulu massif north of Manang, a cluster of summits that also includes Chulu East and Chulu Far East. Reached from the Annapurna Circuit, the peak is climbed via a remote side valley away from the main trail, lending the ascent a quieter, more expedition-like feel than the roadside Pisang Peak. Its altitude, well above 6,400 m, makes it one of the loftiest of the popular trekking peaks, and the summit panorama spans the Annapurnas, Gangapurna, Tilicho and the brown ramparts of the Manang valley.

Height and location

At 6,419 metres (21,059 feet), Chulu West lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area in the Manang district. Climbers leave the Annapurna region treks trail to establish base and high camps below the glacier. Because the circuit gains height steadily through Manang, the approach itself acclimatises climbers well, and a Chulu ascent is often built into an itinerary that later crosses the Thorong La pass at 5,416 m.

The climb

Summit day crosses a glacier and ascends sustained snow-and-ice slopes, using crampons, ice axe and fixed ropes on the steeper sections. It is more committing than Pisang Peak but not as sharply technical as Lobuche East — the main test is the height and the length of the day at well over 6,000 m. Solid cardiovascular fitness and comfort on steeper snow are the keys to success.

Difficulty, season and safety

Spring (April–May) and autumn (October–November) offer the best snow conditions and visibility. With a summit above 6,400 m, careful acclimatisation is essential; use the circuit's natural ascent profile and read our altitude sickness guide before committing. Chulu West pairs neatly with Pisang Peak on the same trek for climbers wanting two summits, while Tharpu Chuli (Tent Peak) suits those heading into the Annapurna Sanctuary instead. An NMA climbing permit, registered agency and guide are required — see our Nepal trekking guide.
