How to Get Around Nepal

Domestic flights, tourist buses, local buses and private jeeps — how to travel around Nepal and how long it really takes.

Distances in Nepal look short on a map but take far longer on the ground, thanks to mountainous terrain and winding roads. Your main choices are domestic flights, tourist buses, local buses and private jeeps or cars — and the right mix depends on your budget and how much time you have.

The short answer

For long hops like Kathmandu to the mountains, fly to save a day but expect weather delays. Between tourist hubs, tourist buses are cheap and comfortable. For flexibility and rough roads, hire a private jeep with driver. Local buses are cheapest but slow and crowded.

The Kathmandu–Pokhara route

The country's busiest tourist corridor links Kathmandu and Pokhara, about 200km apart:

  • Flight: ~25 minutes, the quickest option if the weather holds.
  • Tourist bus: ~6–8 hours along the Prithvi Highway, with rest stops.
  • Private car or jeep: ~5–7 hours with the freedom to stop where you like.

Road conditions and times

  • Slow going: Mountain roads, traffic and landslides mean averages of 30–40km/h are common.
  • Monsoon risk: Rain (June–September) can trigger landslides and long delays.
  • Buffer days: Allow extra time around flights and remote road journeys.

Time your travel with the Nepal weather and climate guide, since the monsoon disrupts both roads and flights. Heading to the hills afterwards? The Nepal trekking guide explains how to reach the main trailheads from these hubs.
