By tourist bus

Tourist buses leave Kathmandu early and travel west to Narayangadh, then south-west to Bhairahawa, with onward connections or a short transfer to Lumbini. It is a long 8 to 9 hour day, so bring snacks and patience. Confirm whether your bus reaches Lumbini's Buddha Chowk or stops in Bhairahawa.

By private car or jeep

A private car or jeep is more comfortable for the long drive and lets you break the journey, for example with a night near Chitwan. Expect a full day on the road either way, but you control the stops and pace.

By air

Flights connect Kathmandu with Bhairahawa (Gautam Buddha Airport) in about 35 minutes, followed by a 30 to 40 minute drive to Lumbini. This is by far the most comfortable way to visit on a short trip, turning a hard day on the road into a morning.

Which option to choose

Fly to Bhairahawa if your schedule is tight and your budget allows. Otherwise, rather than a single brutal bus day, travel via Chitwan and split the journey into manageable legs with a safari highlight in between.

Tips

  • Pair Lumbini with Chitwan to break up the long southern route.
  • Hire a bicycle or e-rickshaw to explore the large monastic zone on arrival.
  • Start early on bus days; afternoon arrivals leave little time for the gardens.

Plan onward travel with getting around Nepal. The most popular approach is to combine it with the jungle via the Chitwan to Lumbini route, or arrive overland through Kathmandu to Chitwan. Discover the sacred sites in Lumbini before you depart Kathmandu.
