Langtang Region Treks

The closest big trekking area to Kathmandu — Langtang Valley, Gosaikunda, the Tamang Heritage Trail and gentle Helambu, reached by road not flight.

The Langtang region, the band of valleys and ridges directly north of Kathmandu, is the capital's nearest big trekking area. There are no mountain flights to catch: every route here begins with a road journey, which makes it ideal for shorter trips and anyone wary of the Lukla flight. The region is the homeland of the Tamang and Hyolmo peoples, dotted with monasteries, cheese factories and homestays, and it was among the hardest hit by the 2015 earthquake. The trails have since been rebuilt and reopened, and trekking here is one of the most direct ways to support the recovery.

The short answer

For the headline experience, walk the Langtang Valley trek up to Kyanjin Gompa beneath Langtang Lirung. For sacred alpine lakes and a high pass, choose Gosaikunda. For deep Tamang culture, hot springs and lower altitudes, pick the Tamang Heritage Trail. And for a gentle, classic walk almost on Kathmandu's doorstep, the Helambu loop is hard to beat. Several of these link together for a longer trip.

The routes, ranked

  1. Langtang Valley — the classic 7 to 9 day walk from Syabrubesi to Kyanjin Gompa (around 3,870 m), with side climbs of Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri. Best for first-timers who want big mountains without extreme altitude.
  2. Gosaikunda — a 5 to 7 day pilgrimage trek to a cluster of sacred lakes (around 4,380 m), reached from Dhunche or combined with Langtang or Helambu over the Laurebina La pass (around 4,610 m).
  3. Tamang Heritage Trail — a cultural 6 to 7 day loop northwest of Langtang through villages such as Gatlang, Tatopani and Briddim, with hot springs, homestays and views of Langtang Lirung and Ganesh Himal at modest altitude.
  4. Helambu — a gentle 5 to 7 day, lower-altitude circuit northeast of Kathmandu through Sherpa and Hyolmo villages like Sermathang and Tarkeghyang, accessible from Sundarijal and good in the shoulder seasons.

Before you go

Even the lower Langtang routes climb high enough to matter, and Gosaikunda crosses serious altitude, so read up on altitude sickness and pace yourself. Study our broader Nepal trekking guide for kit and fitness, and sort your permits in Kathmandu before you set out. With sensible planning, the Langtang region offers some of Nepal's most rewarding trekking just a few hours from the city.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best trek in the Langtang region?+

The Langtang Valley trek is the classic choice, climbing to Kyanjin Gompa beneath glaciated peaks. For sacred alpine lakes choose Gosaikunda, for culture and hot springs pick the Tamang Heritage Trail, and for a gentle, lower-altitude option close to the city walk the Helambu loop. Many trekkers combine two or more.

Is Langtang open after the 2015 earthquake?+

Yes. The 2015 earthquake hit the region hard, especially Langtang village, but the trails, teahouses and bridges have since been rebuilt and the routes are open and welcoming again. Visiting directly supports the community's continued recovery.

What permits do you need for Langtang treks?+

Most Langtang region routes require the Langtang National Park entry permit plus a TIMS card, both arranged in Kathmandu. A licensed guide is now required for these trails. The Helambu loop sits partly outside the park, so check current rules with your agency.

How close to Kathmandu is the Langtang region?+

It is the closest major trekking area to the capital. The Langtang, Gosaikunda and Tamang Heritage trailheads are reached by a drive of roughly 7 hours to Syabrubesi or Dhunche, while Helambu begins just outside the valley at Sundarijal — no domestic flight needed for any of them.
