Nepal in Spring
Warm days, blooming rhododendrons and the second great trekking season — here's what Nepal is like in spring and how to make the most of it.
Spring is Nepal's second great season — warmer than autumn, alive with colour and the time when the high peaks fill with climbers. From March to May the country shakes off winter, the hills turn green and the rhododendron forests catch fire with red and pink.
The short answer
Spring (March–May) brings warm, mostly stable weather and is Nepal's second trekking season. The hills are green and the rhododendrons bloom, the high peaks have their main climbing window, and the Terai grows hot. Skies can be hazier than in autumn, but the season is warmer and a touch quieter early on.
The weather
| Region | Spring conditions |
|---|---|
| Terai | warm in March, hot and humid by May |
| Hills | warm, green, pleasant; haze builds late |
| Himalaya | stable days, cold nights, good for trekking |
The main change through spring is rising heat and increasing afternoon haze in the hills, which can soften long-distance mountain views compared with crystal-clear autumn. Early spring, in March, is often clearer and cooler; by May the lowlands are sweltering and dust and pre-monsoon haze can build over the hills, though high-altitude views usually stay good in the mornings. The weather is generally stable, with only occasional pre-monsoon thunderstorms late in the season.
For trekkers, spring offers a welcome contrast to autumn: warmer nights at altitude, longer daylight and quieter trails, especially in March before the season fills up. The trade-off is that the very clearest, sharpest panoramas belong to autumn, so spring is more about warmth, colour and atmosphere than pin-sharp horizons.
What to do in spring
- Trek among the blooms. Routes like Poon Hill, Mardi Himal and the Annapurna foothills are spectacular when the rhododendrons flower.
- Watch the mountaineers. Spring is the prime climbing season on Everest and the other 8,000-metre peaks; base camps are busy with expeditions.
- Enjoy the hill cities. Kathmandu and Pokhara are warm and pleasant before the monsoon.
- Go early for safari. March is still comfortable in the Terai for wildlife in Chitwan before the pre-monsoon heat sets in.
Festivals in spring
Spring brings some of Nepal's most joyful festivals, including Holi, the festival of colours, in March, and the Newar new-year chariot festival of Bisket Jatra in Bhaktapur in April. The exact dates shift with the lunar and lunisolar calendars each year.
Where to go
Aim high or mid-altitude rather than into the lowland heat. The hills and the Himalaya are at their best, so this is the time for the best treks in Nepal. If you want to understand how the season behaves across the country's bands, read our Nepal weather and climate guide.
The rhododendron belt of the middle hills, between roughly 2,500 and 3,500 metres, is the signature spring experience, with whole hillsides turning red and pink. Treks like Poon Hill, the lower Annapurna Sanctuary and the Langtang and Helambu foothills are timed by many specifically for this bloom. Higher up, the high passes that may be snowbound in winter generally open through spring, making the great circuits accessible again. Lower down, do your Terai safari in March rather than May, before the plains turn fiercely hot.
Practical tips for spring
- Trek in March and early April for the best rhododendrons and quieter trails.
- Start early on clear mornings, as haze and cloud often build through the afternoon.
- Pack for cold nights at altitude despite the warm days, especially above 3,000 metres.
- Save lowland safaris for early spring before the pre-monsoon heat peaks in May.
How spring compares
Spring is the warm, floral alternative to crisp autumn, far livelier than quiet winter, and a much better trekking bet than the wet monsoon that follows it. To slot spring into your plans, see the best time to visit Nepal.
Frequently asked questions
What is the weather like in Nepal in spring?+
Spring (March to May) is warm and increasingly settled. The hills are pleasant and green, the Terai grows hot toward May, and the high mountains have stable daytime weather though nights stay cold. Afternoon haze can build over the hills late in the season, slightly softening distant mountain views.
Is spring a good time to trek in Nepal?+
Yes. Spring is the second main trekking season after autumn, with warmer temperatures, longer days and the famous rhododendron forests in bloom. It is also the main spring mountaineering window on the high peaks. Skies can be hazier than in autumn, but the trails are quieter early in the season.
When do rhododendrons bloom in Nepal?+
Nepal's rhododendron forests, including the national flower the lali gurans, bloom from roughly March into April in the middle hills, with the show moving higher up the slopes as the season warms. Trails like Poon Hill and the Langtang foothills are famous for their spring colour.
How hot is the Terai in spring?+
The Terai heats up quickly through spring, from comfortable in March to genuinely hot and humid by May, when temperatures can approach 40C. Early spring is fine for lowland safaris, but by late May the heat makes the hills and mountains far more comfortable.
