How to Get to Taplejung
Fly to Suketar from Kathmandu, drive a long day from Bhadrapur or Biratnagar, or bus it into the far east.
Taplejung sits in the remote far-eastern hills of Province No. 1, so reaching it takes time and a little flexibility. The quickest option is to fly to Suketar airport near Taplejung bazaar, but flights are small and weather-dependent; the reliable alternative is to fly to the eastern Terai and drive a long day uphill. Here is how each route works.
The short answer
When flights are running, the fastest way from Kathmandu is to fly to Suketar (sometimes via Biratnagar). Otherwise, fly to Bhadrapur or Biratnagar in the eastern Terai and then take a long 8 to 12 hour drive up winding hill roads to Taplejung. Allow buffer days, as both air and road travel can be delayed by weather.
By air (to Suketar)
Suketar airport, on the ridge above the bazaar at around 2,300 metres, handles small domestic aircraft, mainly from Kathmandu and sometimes routed via Biratnagar. A flight saves a long, exhausting road day, but the airstrip is high, the planes are small and service is seasonal and weather-dependent, so cancellations are common. Build in spare days and have a road backup.
By road
The reliable approach is to fly to Bhadrapur or Biratnagar in the eastern Terai — both have frequent flights from Kathmandu — and then drive up. The mountain road climbs for roughly 8 to 12 hours through the eastern hills, often via Phidim, on winding and sometimes rough surfaces. Shared jeeps, local buses and private vehicles all serve the route; a private vehicle is most comfortable for the long haul.
Getting around once you arrive
From the bazaar, onward travel to the Pathibhara trailheads and trekking start points is by jeep or on foot. Roads are limited and rough, so vehicles are hired through hotels or agencies; agree fares first. For the bigger picture on moving around the country, see getting around Nepal.
Good to know
- Fly to the Terai to be safe: Depending on Suketar alone is risky; Bhadrapur or Biratnagar plus a drive is more dependable.
- Buffer for weather: Mountain flights and roads both slip in poor conditions — never schedule tightly.
- Permits first: For Kanchenjunga, arrange permits and a guide before you go; see the Nepal trekking guide.
- Plan your stay: Sort accommodation with where to stay in Taplejung and dates with the best time to visit Taplejung.
