Chitwan Itinerary: 2 to 3 Days in the Jungle
A ready-made 2 to 3 day Chitwan plan combining safari, river, culture and wildlife.
The ideal Chitwan itinerary is two nights in Sauraha, which is enough to fit the jeep safari, a river canoe trip, the wildlife centres and an evening Tharu show without rushing. Add a third night if you want to slow down and squeeze in birdwatching or a deeper jungle walk. Here is how to structure it.
When to go
Plan your dates around the dry season. October to March is the best time, with cooler weather and the clearest wildlife sightings once the tall grass is cut — see the full breakdown in our best time to visit Chitwan guide.
Day 1 — Arrive, river and culture
Most travellers arrive from Kathmandu or Pokhara by early afternoon (it's a 5 to 6 hour drive from Pokhara or a short flight to Bharatpur). Settle into your lodge, then take a late-afternoon dugout canoe trip on the Rapti River, drifting past basking crocodiles and waterbirds. Cap the evening with a Tharu cultural program and the famous stick dance in Sauraha.
Day 2 — Full-day jungle safari
Dedicate your full day to the headline event: a jeep jungle safari deep into the park. With an early start you maximise your chances of one-horned rhinos, deer, crocodiles and, if you're very lucky, a tiger. A full-day route can also take in Kasara and the gharial breeding centre. Back near Sauraha, visit the elephant breeding centre at Khorsor in the late afternoon.
Day 3 (optional) — Slow morning and wildlife
With a third day, head out at dawn for a quiet guided jungle walk or focused birdwatching, then cycle out to the Ramsar-listed Bishazari Tal wetland. Otherwise, this is your departure morning — onward routes lead west to Lumbini or back to the hills.
How to get there and around
Chitwan is a 5 to 6 hour drive from Kathmandu or Pokhara, or a short flight to Bharatpur. In and around Sauraha, get about on foot, by bicycle or by jeep; all park activities are arranged through your lodge or a registered operator and require a licensed guide.

Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Chitwan?+
Two nights and roughly two and a half days is the sweet spot. That gives you a full-day jeep safari, a canoe trip, the elephant and gharial centres and an evening Tharu show. Add a third night to slow down and add birdwatching or a jungle walk.
What is a good 2-day Chitwan itinerary?+
Arrive and take an afternoon canoe trip plus a Tharu cultural show, spend the next day on a full jeep safari with the elephant breeding centre, then depart the following morning after a short jungle or village walk.
Is one day enough for Chitwan?+
One day is rushed but possible if you focus on a single highlight, such as a half-day jeep safari or a canoe trip and the elephant centre. To do the park justice and increase your wildlife chances, plan for at least two nights.
How do you get to Chitwan and how long does it take?+
Chitwan is about a five to six hour drive from Kathmandu or Pokhara by tourist bus or private car, or a short 20 to 25 minute flight to Bharatpur from Kathmandu followed by a transfer to Sauraha.
