How to Get to Dharan
Fly to Biratnagar then drive an hour, take a highway bus, or go overland from Kathmandu — all explained.
Dharan sits in Sunsari district where the eastern Terai meets the hills, so the fastest way in is to fly to nearby Biratnagar and drive an hour, while budget travellers can come overland by bus along the East–West Highway. Here is how each option works.
The short answer
The quickest route from Kathmandu is to fly to Biratnagar (about an hour) and then take a roughly one-hour drive to Dharan. Overland, it is a long 12 to 14 hour bus journey. From within eastern Nepal, Dharan is well connected by road through the junction town of Itahari.
By air (via Biratnagar)
Dharan has no commercial airport of its own, so air travellers fly into Biratnagar Airport, about 50 kilometres and an hour away. Biratnagar has frequent domestic flights from Kathmandu, after which a taxi, shared jeep or bus completes the trip up to Dharan. This is the fastest and most comfortable option if time matters.
By road
By bus or private car, Dharan connects to the East–West Highway at Itahari, the main junction for eastern Nepal. From Kathmandu, expect a long 12 to 14 hour haul; from Biratnagar or Itahari it is well under two hours. Tourist and local buses serve the routes, and a private vehicle is the most comfortable choice for the long approach.
Getting around once you arrive
Dharan is compact and walkable in its centre, where the food streets and bazaar are easy to explore on foot. For the hilltop temples, a trip up to Bhedetar or out to Chatara on the Koshi, hire a taxi or arrange a vehicle through your hotel. Agree fares before you set off.
