Saraswati Kunda
A sacred alpine pool on the approach to Gosaikunda, the first of the named holy kunds.
Saraswati Kunda is one of the named sacred pools on the high approach to Gosaikunda, set among the alpine tarns of Langtang National Park. Dedicated to Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, it is often the first of the holy kunds that trekkers reach as they climb toward the main lake basin — a quiet, reflective spot that marks the start of the sacred high country.
What it is
The pool lies a little below the main Gosaikunda lake, at around 4,200 to 4,300m, on the climb above Lauribina. It is smaller and gentler than the principal lake but no less revered, and seeing it first gives the arrival at Gosaikunda a sense of build-up. From here the trail continues a short way up to the main basin and its other named pools.
How to visit
Saraswati Kunda sits directly on the standard route up from Dhunche via Sing Gompa (Chandanbari), so almost everyone walking to the lakes passes it. Pause here to catch your breath in the thin air, then push on to the main lake and link it with the Surya Kunda and Bhairav Kunda for a circuit of the named pools.
Good to know
- The pool is sacred — keep the shore clean and do not swim for recreation.
- You are already above 4,000m here; move slowly and read our altitude sickness in Nepal guide.
- Conditions are cold and exposed; carry warm layers even on clear days.
