Sing Gompa (Chandanbari)

The cheese-making village and monastery on the climb to Gosaikunda, key acclimatisation stop.

Sing Gompa, also known as Chandanbari, is the small village, monastery and cheese factory on the climb to Gosaikunda, set at about 3,330m in Langtang National Park. It is the standard overnight and acclimatisation stop between the roadhead at Dhunche and the high lakes — and one of the most characterful pauses on the route, with a Buddhist gompa to visit and local yak cheese to try.

Why it matters

Stopping here breaks the big climb to the lakes into manageable days and, more importantly, lets your body adjust before the steep haul up to the Gosaikunda lake basin. Sleeping at a sensible altitude is one of the simplest ways to reduce the risk of altitude sickness higher up — see our altitude sickness in Nepal guide. The village's cheese factory, a legacy of cheese-making introduced in the Langtang region, is a famous trailside draw.

What to do

  • Visit the monastery and spin the prayer wheels in the quiet forest setting.
  • Buy a piece of local yak or cow cheese to carry up to the lakes.
  • Take a short acclimatisation walk above the village before resting for the night.

On the trail

Sing Gompa sits roughly a day's walk above Dhunche through oak and rhododendron forest, with Saraswati Kunda and the main lake another long climbing day beyond. It has the most comfortable teahouses on the route — see our guide to where to stay in Gosaikunda.
