Langtang National Park

The Himalayan park nearest Kathmandu — red pandas, alpine valleys, Tamang villages and the sacred Gosaikunda lakes.

Langtang National Park is the closest Himalayan national park to Kathmandu — a compact world of glacial valleys, rhododendron forest, yak pastures and Tamang villages just north of the capital. Established in 1976 as Nepal's first Himalayan national park, it offers high-mountain trekking and rare wildlife within a day's reach of the city.

Location and landscape

The park covers roughly 1,710 square kilometres across Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Sindhupalchok districts, stretching from subtropical forest up to peaks above 7,000 metres on the Tibetan border. It encompasses the Langtang Valley, the high lakes of Gosaikunda, and the Helambu hills, with the sacred peak of Langtang Lirung dominating the skyline.

Wildlife and scenery

Langtang's forests are among Nepal's best for the red panda, and the park also shelters Himalayan black bear, Himalayan tahr, musk deer, ghoral, grey langur and, in the high country, the snow leopard. The scenery shifts dramatically with altitude — oak and rhododendron woodland, alpine meadows bright with wildflowers, glacier-fed streams and the turquoise pilgrimage lakes of Gosaikunda, sacred to Hindus and Buddhists alike. Higher up, yaks graze the summer pastures (kharkas) beneath Langtang Lirung, and small cheese factories carry on a tradition introduced decades ago, giving the valley a distinctive working-mountain character alongside its wildness.

Why visit

It is the most accessible Himalayan trekking park from Kathmandu, ideal for travellers short on time who still want glaciers, alpine lakes and authentic mountain culture. The valley trek, the Gosaikunda lakes and the Tamang Heritage Trail can be linked into longer journeys, from a relaxed week to a fortnight crossing the high Laurebina La pass. The teahouse infrastructure is good and the trails are well established, so independent trekking is straightforward. For routes, itineraries and trail detail, see the Langtang region treks guide.

How to get there

The usual approach is a long but spectacular drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (the road head for the Langtang Valley) or to Dhunche for Gosaikunda. From there all travel is on foot. The proximity to the capital keeps both cost and travel time low compared with Everest or Annapurna.

Best time to visit

Spring (March to May), when rhododendrons bloom, and autumn (October to November), with the clearest skies, are the best seasons. Winter brings snow and cold at altitude, and the monsoon (June to September) makes the road and trails muddy and leech-prone with limited views.

Permits and fees

Trekkers need a Langtang National Park entry permit and a TIMS card, available in Kathmandu or at checkpoints near the park. Daily entry rates are highest for foreign visitors and lower for SAARC and Nepali nationals. Carry your passport for the trailside checks.

Conservation note

The 2015 earthquake triggered an avalanche that destroyed Langtang village with great loss of life; the valley has been rebuilt and trekking now underpins the recovery of its Tamang communities. Visitors support conservation and resilience by staying in local lodges, hiring local guides and porters, and protecting the red panda's fragile forest habitat by sticking to trails.

Langtang is the Himalayan park on Kathmandu's doorstep. Compare it with the higher Sagarmatha National Park around Everest, the city-edge Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, or browse the full national parks of Nepal collection.
