Ilam Bazaar
The hillside heart of Nepal's tea district — stepped lanes, tea shops and the historic Ilam tea factory.
Ilam Bazaar is the hillside heart of Nepal's tea district — a compact town of stepped lanes, tea shops and small hotels strung along a ridge, surrounded by the gardens that made the place famous. It is the district's main hub and the natural base for trips out to the tea estates, the sacred lake and the sunrise ridges.
What to expect
The town is easy to explore on foot: a knot of lanes lined with shops selling Ilam tea, simple eateries and viewpoints looking out over the green hills. The historic Ilam tea factory, one of the oldest in Nepal, sits nearby, and visitors can often arrange a tour to watch the orthodox process — withering, rolling, fermenting and drying the leaf. Buying tea direct here, fresh from the gardens, is part of the appeal.
Ilam Bazaar is also the administrative and commercial centre of the district, so it has the everyday bustle of a working hill town: market stalls, government offices, schools and a steady flow of jeeps heading out to the villages. It is not a polished tourist destination, and that is much of its charm — you see ordinary eastern-hills life going on around you. A short walk to a ridge or rooftop gives wide views over the surrounding tea slopes, especially good in the soft light of early morning and late afternoon.
A base for the district
Most travellers use the bazaar as their hub, sleeping here and making day trips out. From town it is an easy run up to the sacred Mai Pokhari lake, out along the road to the Kanyam and Fikkal tea gardens, and down into the valley to the Mai Beni confluence. Transport for all of these — shared jeeps, local buses and hired vehicles — gathers in and around the bazaar, making it the natural place to organise your days.
