Bhandar

A Sherpa village stage on the historic Jiri-to-Everest trail, with terraced fields, a gompa and trekking lodges.

Bhandar is a Sherpa village on the classic Jiri-to-Everest trek, set in a green bowl of terraced fields below forested ridges. The traditional second overnight stage on the historic walk-in, it has a peaceful Buddhist character — a small gompa, chortens and prayer flags above the farmland — and a handful of lodges serving trekkers bound for Solu and the Khumbu.

What to expect

Bhandar is reached from Shivalaya over the Deurali pass, a steep first day. From the village the trail descends to the Likhu Khola and climbs onward toward Sete and Junbesi, deeper into Solu. It is more a place to rest, eat and soak up hill life than a sightseeing stop, though the ridges above reward an evening stroll with fine views.

The Sherpa community here is part of the rich cultural tapestry of the route — read more in our guide to Jirel and Sherpa culture around Jiri.

A Sherpa village in Solu

Bhandar (sometimes written Bhandar Deurali) sits at around 2,200 metres in the lower Solu country, the southern part of the Sherpa homeland that stretches up to the Khumbu. Its character is markedly different from the lower trailhead villages: whitewashed houses, a Buddhist gompa, chortens painted with watchful eyes, and lines of prayer flags strung across the fields. This is your first real taste of the Sherpa Buddhist world that defines the higher route, and it makes a memorable second night on the trail.

The trail through Bhandar

Walkers arrive over the Deurali pass from Shivalaya, tired from the steep first day. After a night here, the path drops sharply to the Likhu Khola, crosses the river, then climbs again toward Sete and the high Lamjura La beyond. As everywhere on the Jiri walk-in, expect serious daily elevation change — Bhandar is a welcome flat shelf in an otherwise relentless rhythm of climbs and descents. Take the evening to rest, eat well and wander up to the gompa for views over the valley.
