Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek
The classic historic walk-in to Everest from Jiri via Shivalaya, Bhandar and Junbesi to the Khumbu.
The Jiri to Everest Base Camp trek is the classic, historic walk-in to the Khumbu — the route the earliest expeditions and trekkers, including the Hillary-era teams, followed on foot all the way to Everest. Instead of flying to Lukla, you start walking from Jiri (or nearby Shivalaya) and cross the foothills of Solu before joining the main Everest trail. It adds about a week each way, but rewards you with superb scenery, deeper culture and better acclimatisation.
The short answer
Walk from Jiri Bazaar or Shivalaya through Bhandar, Sete and Junbesi, over a series of high passes, to reach Lukla and the standard Everest region trek onward to Base Camp. Allow roughly 18 to 22 days round trip.
The route
The lower section is a switchback of ridges and valleys: each day climbs to a pass, then drops to a river, then climbs again. From Shivalaya you cross the Deurali pass to Bhandar, descend to the Likhu Khola, then climb through Sete to the Lamjura La — the highest point of the walk-in. Beyond lies Junbesi, a beautiful Sherpa village with an important monastery, before the trail works its way to Lukla and merges with the busy Khumbu route to Namche, Tengboche and Everest Base Camp.
Why choose the walk-in
- Acclimatisation: Days of foothill walking build fitness and ease the altitude gain ahead.
- Solitude and culture: The lower stages are quiet, passing Jirel, Sherpa and Tamang villages far from the Lukla crowds.
- No flight uncertainty: You avoid the notoriously weather-prone Lukla flights, at least on the way up.
Side trips
The famous Pikey Peak Everest viewpoint can be woven into the Solu section for one of Nepal's best sunrise panoramas, and the historic flagstone bazaar at Those village lies near the early stages.
Practical planning
This is a demanding, long trek. Train beforehand, budget for around three weeks, and prepare carefully for altitude — read the guide to altitude sickness in Nepal and the general Nepal trekking guide. Carry permits, passport copies and enough cash for the whole trail, and check the best time to visit Jiri to trek in the clear, dry seasons.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Jiri to Everest Base Camp trek?+
It is the classic, historic walk-in to Everest, starting on foot from Jiri (or nearby Shivalaya) rather than flying to Lukla. The route crosses ridges through Solu via Bhandar, Sete and Junbesi to join the main Khumbu trail, then continues to Everest Base Camp.
How long does the Jiri to EBC trek take?+
Allow roughly 18 to 22 days round trip, depending on pace and side trips. The walk from Jiri to Lukla adds about six to seven days each way compared with flying, which is why the route demands more time but rewards with better acclimatisation.
Is the Jiri walk-in harder than flying to Lukla?+
It is longer and more strenuous, with big daily ascents and descents through the foothills before the high Khumbu. But the gradual build-up improves fitness and acclimatisation, and it avoids the uncertainty of Lukla flights, making it a rewarding alternative.
Do you need permits for the Jiri to Everest trek?+
Yes — you need the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit and Sagarmatha National Park entry for the Khumbu, plus a local-area permit on the lower Jiri section. Carry passport copies and cash, as fees are paid at checkpoints on the trail.
