Pikey Peak Everest Viewpoint

One of Nepal's finest Everest viewpoints — a ridge summit near Jiri sweeping from Everest to Kanchenjunga.

Pikey Peak is a grassy ridge summit of about 4,065 metres in the Solu region near Jiri, prized as one of Nepal's finest Everest viewpoints. From the top, a vast Himalayan arc unfolds — Everest, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Numbur and dozens of other peaks — earning the spot a reputation as one of the best places in the country to watch the sun rise over the world's highest mountains.

What to expect

The viewpoint is famously said to have been a favourite of Sir Edmund Hillary, who admired its sweeping outlook on Everest. Standing well back from the high Khumbu, Pikey frames the whole eastern Himalaya rather than a single face. The walk up runs along open grassy ridges and through rhododendron forest, dotted with chortens, prayer flags and Sherpa and Jirel settlements — a gentle, scenic counterpoint to the higher trails.

Most walkers climb to the summit for sunrise from a high camp just below, then descend. At around 4,065 metres you feel the altitude, but the trek is rated easy to moderate.

What you can see

On a clear morning the panorama is extraordinary. To the east and north rise Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and the great wall of the Khumbu; far to the east stands Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest peak; and closer at hand the elegant Numbur, Karyolung and the peaks ringing Solu fill the foreground. Few accessible viewpoints in Nepal gather so many giants into one sweep, which is exactly why Pikey draws photographers and trekkers seeking the classic Everest sunrise without the crowds and altitude of the high Khumbu.

A gentler alternative

Pikey Peak has grown popular as a shorter, lower-altitude trek in its own right, suitable for those with limited time or who want to avoid the highest elevations. Trails wind through pristine rhododendron and pine forest, past grazing yaks and small Sherpa and Jirel hamlets, with simple lodges and homestays along the way. The cultural texture — gompas, mani walls and warm hill hospitality — is as much a draw as the summit view. It can be done as a standalone four-to-six-day loop or folded into the longer historic walk to Everest.
