Hattiban, on a wooded hillside near Pharping in the south of the Kathmandu Valley, is the area's best-loved natural rock-climbing crag. It's where local climbers go to clip bolts on real rock, swapping the plastic holds of the indoor wall for a quiet forest setting an hour from the city.

What to expect

Good to know

  • Season: Climb here in the dry months, roughly October–April. The rock gets slick in the monsoon.
  • Getting there: A 45–60 minute taxi ride from Thamel toward Pharping; arrange a return or have the driver wait.
  • First time? Warm up indoors at the Astrek Climbing Wall before heading out, and pair it with the boulders in the Nagarjun forest for a full climbing weekend. Base yourself at one of the best hotels in Kathmandu for an early start.
