- Nagarjun forest, Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, Kathmandu
The Nagarjun forest, inside Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park on the northwestern edge of the Kathmandu Valley, is the closest patch of natural rock to the city. Among the trees you'll find boulders and short routes — a calm, green spot to climb without the longer drive out to Pharping.
What to expect
This is a low-key, bouldering-and-short-routes crag rather than a big sport wall. Local climbers come here for an easy half-day on real rock close to town. Bring a pad and a guide or experienced partner, as there's no gear rental.
Good to know
- Entry: The forest is inside a national park with a small entry fee at the gate — bring rupees in cash.
- Season: Best in the dry months (October–April); the rock and trails get slippery in the monsoon.
- Pair it with: A session on the Astrek Climbing Wall in town and a day on the bolted routes at the Hattiban crag for a complete Kathmandu climbing trip.
