Kushma–Balewa Suspension Bridge

A long, high pedestrian bridge over the Kali Gandaki gorge linking Kushma with Balewa in Parbat.

Address
Kushma to Balewa, Parbat, Gandaki Province

The Kushma–Balewa suspension bridge is one of Kushma's great long spans: a high steel-cable footbridge thrown across the Kali Gandaki gorge, linking the town of Kushma with Balewa on the opposite rim in Parbat district. Like its famous neighbour, the Kushma–Gyadi bridge, it is a working community crossing that doubles as a thrilling, free walk hundreds of metres above the river.

A high crossing

The bridge owes its drama to the canyon it spans. The Kali Gandaki has cut a deep, steep-sided gorge here between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs, so the only practical way to carry a footpath across is a single soaring span from rim to rim. The slender walkway, fitted with mesh netting along the sides, bows gently across the void; from the centre you look straight down to the river far below and out along the canyon walls. On windy afternoons it sways noticeably — part of the experience.

Built for people

Like thousands of trail bridges across Nepal's hills, the Kushma–Balewa crossing exists to serve villagers, not tourists. Before it was built, people faced a long, steep descent to the river and a hard climb up the far side; the bridge cut that to a few airy minutes on foot, connecting communities, schools and markets. Walking it is a window into how vital these spans are to everyday hill life — a theme explored across the suspension bridges of Kushma.

Good to know

  • Cost: Free to walk; the bungee and swing are separate paid activities.
  • Best time: Morning, for the steadiest air and clearest gorge light.
  • Footwear: Wear secure shoes and hold the cables on windy days.
  • Heights: The height is real — go slowly if you are nervous, but the mesh and engineering are reassuring.

How to visit

The bridge is an easy walk from Kushma town; pair it with the Kali Gandaki gorge viewpoint and the bungee and swing for a full gorge day. For the bigger picture, see the longest suspension bridges of Nepal and start with the Kushma travel guide. Read how to get to Kushma to plan the journey.
