Jomsom is the windswept administrative hub of Mustang, strung along the wide gravel bed of the Kali Gandaki at around 2,700m between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs. It is not a town you come to for itself so much as the place everything in the region passes through — the airstrip, the jeep stand and the trailhead for almost every Mustang journey.
What to expect
The town divides into an older quarter and a newer strip of guesthouses, shops and government offices. The small Mustang Eco Museum is worth half an hour for its displays on local Thakali culture, traditional dress and Tibetan Buddhist artefacts. Beyond that, Jomsom's appeal is practical and atmospheric: watching small aircraft thread the gorge in the calm of early morning, feeling the famous afternoon wind pick up, and stocking up before heading deeper into the high desert.
The surrounding valley is the heart of Mustang's celebrated apple country, and you will find local cider, brandy and dried fruit in town. From here, the road and trail fork toward the pilgrimage temple at Muktinath, the medieval lanes of Kagbeni, and the orchards of Marpha just south.
A crossroads town
Jomsom has long been the meeting point of Mustang's two halves — the freely accessible lower valley and the restricted north — and that role shapes its character. Trekkers, pilgrims, jeep drivers, traders and government staff all pass through, and the town runs on movement: morning flights, departing convoys, porters loading up for the trails. The older settlement on the east bank retains traditional Thakali houses and a quieter pace, while the strip near the airstrip is firmly geared to travellers, with bakeries, gear shops and lodges. For most visitors it is a place to organise, rest and acclimatise rather than linger, but its position in the gorge, with peaks rearing up on both sides, gives even a short stay a memorable, frontier-town feel.
Good to know
- Getting in: Fly from Pokhara into Jomsom's high airstrip — see the classic Pokhara to Jomsom and Muktinath route — or come up by jeep along the Kali Gandaki road.
- Timing: Plan flights and longer walks for the morning, before the valley wind builds.
- Nearby: Continue up to the sacred temple at Muktinath and the medieval village of Kagbeni, or drop south to the apple village of Marpha.
- Going north: Jomsom is the staging point for the Upper Mustang trek; plan the wider trip with our Mustang itinerary.
For most visitors, Jomsom is the hinge of any Mustang trip — the last sizeable town with reliable services before the trails climb into the bare, beautiful country beyond. Use it to rest, restock and adjust to the altitude, then choose your direction: south to the orchards, up to the temple, or north into the restricted high desert.

Frequently asked questions
Where is Jomsom?+
Jomsom sits at around 2,700m on the Kali Gandaki river in the Mustang district of Gandaki Province. It is the district headquarters and the main transport hub for the region, with an airstrip and a road running up the valley from Pokhara via Beni and Tatopani.
How do you get to Jomsom?+
You can fly the short, scenic hop from Pokhara to Jomsom's high-altitude airstrip, or drive up the Kali Gandaki road by bus or jeep. Flights are weather-dependent and often morning-only because of the strong afternoon winds that funnel through the gorge.
What is there to do in Jomsom?+
Jomsom itself is more a base than a sight — it has guesthouses, the small Mustang Eco Museum, and an apple-growing valley nearby. Most travellers use it as the launch point for Muktinath, Kagbeni and Marpha, or as the trailhead for Upper Mustang.
Why is Jomsom so windy?+
Jomsom sits in the deep Kali Gandaki gorge between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs, which channels strong winds up the valley most afternoons. This is why flights and longer walks are usually scheduled for the calmer morning hours.
Do you need a permit for Jomsom?+
No restricted-area permit is needed for Jomsom, which lies in freely accessible Lower Mustang on the standard Annapurna Conservation Area permit. The special Upper Mustang permit is only required north of Kagbeni. Confirm current rules before travelling.
