How to Get to Namche Bazaar

The Lukla flight then a two-day trek via Phakding and Monjo — flights, permits and the drive-and-fly options explained.

The short answer: there is no road to Namche Bazaar. You fly to the mountain airstrip at Lukla — from Kathmandu, or in peak season from Manthali (Ramechhap) — then trek roughly two days on foot, overnighting at Phakding before the steep climb up to Namche. Helicopters offer a faster, costlier shortcut.

The standard route

  1. Fly to Lukla (2,840m). The short, scenic flight lands at one of the world's most dramatic airstrips. In autumn and spring, flights often depart from Manthali airport in Ramechhap instead of Kathmandu, requiring a pre-dawn drive of four to five hours from the capital first.
  2. Trek Lukla to Phakding (2,610m). An easy half-day downhill alongside the Dudh Koshi.
  3. Trek Phakding to Namche (3,440m). A longer day crossing high suspension bridges, passing the Monjo park gate, then a long, steep climb to Namche — the first real taste of altitude.

Alternatives

  • Helicopter: Direct charters from Kathmandu or Lukla save time but cost considerably more and skip valuable acclimatization.
  • The long trek in: Some trekkers walk from Phaplu or Jiri over several extra days, which builds excellent fitness and acclimatization.

Permits

Carry the Sagarmatha National Park permit (checked at Monjo) and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit throughout.

Good to know

  • Lukla flights are weather-dependent — build buffer days into your plan.
  • Don't rush the climb to Namche — slow and steady, then rest with the acclimatization day hikes.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get to Namche Bazaar?+

There is no road to Namche. You fly from Kathmandu (or, in peak season, from Manthali in Ramechhap) to Lukla, then trek about two days on foot, staying overnight at Phakding before the long climb to Namche via the Monjo park gate. Helicopters are a faster but pricier alternative.

How long is the trek from Lukla to Namche Bazaar?+

It is usually done over two days: a gentle half-day from Lukla down to Phakding (or Monjo), then a longer second day with a steep climb from the Dudh Koshi up to Namche. The climb to Namche is the toughest part and where altitude first becomes noticeable.

Why do flights leave from Manthali instead of Kathmandu?+

During the busy autumn and spring seasons, Lukla flights are often shifted to Manthali airport in Ramechhap to ease congestion at Kathmandu. That means a roughly four-to-five-hour pre-dawn drive from Kathmandu to Manthali before the short flight to Lukla.

What permits do you need for Namche Bazaar?+

You need the Sagarmatha National Park entry permit, checked at the Monjo gate, and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit. Carry both throughout the trek, as they are checked at several points along the trail.
