Acclimatization Day Hikes from Namche Bazaar
How to spend your Namche rest day — Everest View Point, Syangboche, Khumjung and Khunde, climbing high and sleeping low.
The short answer: spend your Namche rest day gaining height on a day hike, then sleeping low back in town — the single most effective way to acclimatize before continuing toward Everest. Namche's position at 3,440m makes it the natural place for this, and the trails above offer some of the best views and villages in the Khumbu while your body adapts.
Why acclimatize here
At 3,440m the air is already thin, and pushing higher too fast is the main cause of altitude sickness. Building in at least one full rest day at Namche — ideally with a height-gaining walk — dramatically improves your chances of reaching Base Camp or Gokyo safely. Read altitude sickness in Nepal before you start.
The classic rest-day circuit
- Everest View Point: A steep one-to-two-hour climb to your first sight of Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam.
- Hotel Everest View at Syangboche: Continue to the terrace of one of the world's highest hotels for tea and the panorama.
- Khumjung and Khunde villages: Loop on to these traditional Sherpa villages, home to Hillary's school and hospital, before descending.
A shorter option
On a tired day, the climb to the Sagarmatha National Park visitor centre gains useful height, sets out the park's geology and wildlife, and rewards you with a fine ridge viewpoint — a gentler alternative that still helps you adapt.
Good to know
- Climb high, sleep low — always return to Namche to sleep.
- Go slowly and drink plenty of water; it is the altitude, not the distance, that bites.
- Go early for clear morning views before the cloud builds.
When you are ready to move on, the climb to Tengboche Monastery is the next great step. See all the things to do in Namche Bazaar, the best time to visit, and our guide to the Everest region treks. Start from the Namche Bazaar travel guide.

Frequently asked questions
Why do you need an acclimatization day in Namche?+
Namche sits at 3,440m, high enough that your body needs time to adjust before climbing further. A rest day with a height-gaining day hike, then a night back at Namche's altitude, is the safest and most reliable way to acclimatize before continuing toward Everest Base Camp or Gokyo.
What does climb high, sleep low mean?+
It is the golden rule of high-altitude trekking: gain altitude during the day to stimulate your body's adaptation, then descend to sleep at a lower elevation. The Namche day hikes are designed around exactly this, climbing to viewpoints and villages above town before returning to sleep in Namche.
What are the best acclimatization hikes from Namche?+
The classic outing is the steep climb to the Everest View Point above town, often extended to Hotel Everest View at Syangboche and the Sherpa villages of Khumjung and Khunde. The walk up to the national park visitor centre is a shorter alternative on a tired day.
How do I know if I have altitude sickness?+
Watch for headache, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite and poor sleep. Mild symptoms are common; if they worsen or you develop breathlessness at rest or confusion, descend immediately. Read a dedicated altitude guide and never ascend further while symptoms are getting worse.
