Tengboche Monastery

The Khumbu's largest monastery at 3,867m, on a ridge facing Ama Dablam and Everest — the spiritual heart of the region.

Tengboche Monastery (Thyangboche) is the largest gompa in the Khumbu and the spiritual heart of the Everest region, standing on a pine-and-rhododendron ridge at about 3,867m. Its setting is unforgettable: the monastery faces a wall of giants — Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and the spire of Ama Dablam rising almost directly ahead — making it one of the most photographed places in Nepal.

What to expect

The monastery is an active centre of Tibetan Buddhism, home to monks whose chanting and ceremonies you can sometimes witness. Inside, butter lamps, murals and a large Buddha image fill the prayer hall. The forested approach, the prayer wheels at the gate and the sweep of peaks beyond combine into the emotional high point of many treks.

Mani Rimdu

Each autumn Tengboche hosts Mani Rimdu, a multi-day festival of masked dances performed by the monks to celebrate Buddhism's triumph over the older Bon faith. Sherpa communities gather from across the valley, and visiting during the festival is a rare cultural experience.

Good to know

  • Altitude: About 3,867m — go acclimatized, having rested first in Namche.
  • From Namche: A full day's walk, dropping to Phunki Tenga before the long climb up; most trekkers continue toward Base Camp from here.
  • Etiquette: Walk clockwise, remove shoes and hats inside, and ask before photographing ceremonies.

Build up to it with the acclimatization day hikes from Namche and a visit to Khumjung and Khunde. See it in context with our guide to the Everest region treks, review altitude sickness in Nepal, and start from the Namche Bazaar travel guide.
