The Best Things to Do in Namche Bazaar
Saturday market, museums, the Everest View Point hike, Hotel Everest View, Khumjung and Tengboche — the Khumbu's gateway town.
Namche Bazaar packs a lot into a small bowl of hillside: a centuries-old trading market, two excellent museums, the trailheads for the Khumbu's most famous day hikes, and some of the closest road-free views of Everest you can get without a long trek. Below we have grouped the highlights so you can plan a productive acclimatization stop.
The short answer
Don't miss the Saturday haat at the Namche Bazaar market if your timing allows, and spend your rest day on the steep climb to the Everest View Point for your first sight of Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam. From there it is an easy walk on to Hotel Everest View at Syangboche and the Sherpa villages of Khumjung and Khunde.
Culture and orientation
In town, the Sherpa Culture Museum tells the story of the people who made Everest climbable, while the Sagarmatha National Park visitor centre on the ridge above sets out the geology, wildlife and culture of the park — and offers a fine viewpoint of its own.
With an extra day
If you have time, the climb to Tengboche Monastery, the spiritual heart of the Khumbu, makes a superb out-and-back or a forward step toward Base Camp. Plan a careful, height-gaining schedule with our guide to acclimatization day hikes from Namche.

Frequently asked questions
What is Namche Bazaar most famous for?+
Namche is famous as the Sherpa capital and the gateway to Everest. Its weekly Saturday market, its role as the main acclimatization stop on the Everest trek, and the close mountain views from the ridge above town are the headline draws.
What can you do on an acclimatization day in Namche?+
The classic rest-day plan is the short, steep hike up to the Everest View Point above town for a first look at Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam, often continuing to Hotel Everest View at Syangboche and the Sherpa villages of Khumjung and Khunde before descending to sleep low.
Do you need to pay a fee to visit the Namche area?+
Yes. You enter Sagarmatha National Park before Monjo, where the visitor centre and park checkpoint are, and you also need the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit. Carry both, as they are checked along the trail.
