Sagarmatha National Park Visitor Centre
A hilltop centre above Namche on the park's geology, wildlife and Sherpa culture, with a fine Everest-range viewpoint.
The Sagarmatha National Park visitor centre stands on the ridge above Namche Bazaar, the interpretive hub for the park that protects Everest and the upper Khumbu. UNESCO-listed Sagarmatha National Park is a high-altitude world of glaciers, deep valleys and rare wildlife, and the centre is the best place to understand it before you head higher.
What to expect
Exhibits cover the park's geology and glaciers, its plants and animals — Himalayan tahr, musk deer, the snow leopard and the colourful Impeyan pheasant (Nepal's national bird) — and Sherpa culture and Buddhism. Route maps lay out the trails toward Everest Base Camp and Gokyo. Just as memorable is the viewpoint on the ridge outside: on a clear morning it opens onto Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and the spire of Ama Dablam.
Sagarmatha National Park was established in 1976 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, protecting more than 1,100 square kilometres of the upper Khumbu, including Everest itself. The centre explains how altitude shapes everything here — from the rhododendron and birch forests of the lower valleys to the lichens and glaciers of the high country — and how Sherpa communities have lived sustainably within this fragile landscape for generations.
When to go
Come early in the day for the clearest views from the ridge, and ideally on an acclimatization day when the gentle climb up from town fits perfectly into a height-gaining schedule. Combined with the museum next door, it makes a satisfying half-day that needs no special effort beyond the short, steep walk up.
Good to know
- Location: A short, steep walk above town, next to the Sherpa Culture Museum — do both in one outing.
- Permits: The park entry permit is checked lower down at the Monjo gate; carry it along with the local Khumbu permit.
- Acclimatization: The climb up is ideal gentle height gain; continue to the Everest View Point to keep building altitude slowly.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Sagarmatha National Park visitor centre?+
It is the interpretive centre for Sagarmatha National Park, run by the park authority on the ridge above Namche Bazaar. Displays explain the park's geology, glaciers, plants, wildlife such as Himalayan tahr and musk deer, and Sherpa culture, with maps of the trekking routes.
Where is the visitor centre and is there a viewpoint?+
It sits on the hilltop above Namche, a short steep walk from town, next to the Sherpa Culture Museum. The ridge offers one of the area's best free viewpoints, looking out toward Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam on a clear morning.
Do I pay my park fee here?+
The Sagarmatha National Park entry permit is usually checked and issued at the Monjo checkpoint, lower on the trail before Namche. The visitor centre itself is an exhibition and viewpoint rather than the main fee gate, though it is part of the same park system.
Is the visitor centre worth the climb?+
Yes. It is excellent gentle acclimatization, it sets out the natural and cultural background to the whole trek, and the panorama from the ridge is a highlight in itself, especially early before cloud builds.
