Kathmandu to Ilam
A long 12-14 hour bus or a quick Bhadrapur flight plus 3-hour drive from Kathmandu to the tea hills of Ilam — costs and tips.
Kathmandu to Ilam reaches the far-eastern tea hills of Nepal, famous for their emerald terraced gardens. It is a long way: about 12-14 hours by road, or much faster by flying to Bhadrapur (~45 minutes) and then driving roughly 3 hours up into the hills. Ilam itself has no airport, so the journey always ends with a winding hill drive. This guide compares the slow overland route with the quick fly-and-drive option.

| Flight + drive | ~45 min + ~3 hrs | USD 90-140 + jeep | Fly to Bhadrapur, then hill road |

By bus
Direct buses run from Kathmandu to Ilam, mostly as overnight services to make the long distance bearable. Deluxe or tourist-class night buses with reclining seats are the most comfortable; cheaper local buses take longer and stop often. You cross the Terai on the East-West Highway, then climb east into the hills. Some travellers instead take a bus to Birtamod / Charali in the lowlands and change to a local bus or jeep up to Ilam.
By private car or jeep
A private vehicle is possible but means a very long single day on the road, or an overnight stop. It is rarely worth the cost for solo travellers, but a group wanting door-to-door service and the freedom to stop along the way may prefer it. Most independent visitors instead combine the flight with a hired jeep for the final hill section.
By air
There is no flight directly to Ilam — but the smart way to save time is to fly Kathmandu to Bhadrapur (Gautam Buddha-era Terai airport in the east) in about 45 minutes, then take a shared or private jeep around 3 hours up the hill road through the tea estates. This turns a punishing overland day into a comfortable half-day and is the route most time-pressed visitors choose.
Which option to choose
If you value time and comfort, fly to Bhadrapur and drive up to Ilam. If you are on a tight budget or want to see the country, take an overnight deluxe bus and sleep through the long lowland stretch. A private car only makes sense for groups happy to spend most of a day or two on the road.
Tips
- Book flights early; eastern flights can fill in tea-season and holiday periods.
- For the bus, choose a deluxe night service with reclining seats for the long haul.
- The hill road from Bhadrapur is winding — motion-sickness tablets help.
- Ilam is one of the best places to visit in Nepal for tea-garden scenery; allow a couple of days once you arrive.
