Elephant Breeding Centre, Sauraha
See mothers and calves at the Khorsor elephant centre, an ethical short outing from Sauraha.
The Elephant Breeding Centre at Khorsor, just outside Sauraha on the edge of Chitwan National Park, is where the park breeds and raises the domesticated elephants used in conservation work and anti-poaching patrols. It is a popular, easy and ethical outing — you watch mothers and playful calves around the stables and learn about the breeding programme, without riding the animals. With elephant-back safaris now widely discouraged on welfare grounds, the breeding centre is the responsible way to get close to these giants, in keeping with our responsible travel in Nepal guidance.
What you'll see
The centre is home to a herd of female elephants and their calves, and the youngsters — wobbling, splashing and play-fighting near their mothers — are the obvious draw. Information boards explain the breeding programme, the role of the phanit (elephant handlers) and how the elephants support patrols across the park. To understand the species behind the visit, read the national Asian elephant guide.
Getting there and timing
Khorsor lies about 3 km from central Sauraha. You can walk, cycle or take a short jeep ride, but the most enjoyable route is to cross the Rapti River by dugout canoe and stroll in — neatly combining the centre with a Rapti River canoe trip. Visit in the early morning or late afternoon, when the elephants are around the stables rather than grazing in the forest and the heat has eased.
Good to know
- A small entry fee applies; your lodge can advise on current times and arrange a guide.
- Keep a respectful distance, don't feed the elephants and follow the handlers' instructions.
- Bring water, sun protection and a camera; mornings are best for photography.
- Allow about an hour, longer if you walk or cycle out through the buffer-zone villages.
The breeding centre is a relaxed, family-friendly stop within the Chitwan safari from Sauraha collection, and it pairs well with a visit to the gharial and crocodile breeding centre nearby. See it among the village's highlights in top things to do in Sauraha, and plan the rest from the Sauraha travel guide.
