Rapti River Canoe Trip from Sauraha

Drift past basking gharial and mugger crocodiles and riverbank birds on a Rapti dugout canoe.

A dugout-canoe trip on the Rapti River is Chitwan's quietest, gentlest safari and one of the most memorable things to do in Sauraha. You sit low in a traditional canoe carved from a single tree trunk while a guide poles you silently downstream along the boundary of Chitwan National Park. With no engine noise, you slip up surprisingly close to basking crocodiles and riverbank birds — a perfect, calm contrast to a bumpy jeep safari. Trips usually last around 45 minutes to an hour and push off from the same bank as the famous Sauraha Rapti riverside sunset.

What you'll see

The stars of the trip are the crocodiles: broad-snouted mugger crocodiles and the rare, fish-eating gharial with its long, narrow jaws, both hauled out on the sandbars to bask. Learn the difference in our national gharial crocodile guide. The river is also a birdwatching corridor — kingfishers, egrets, storks, darters and bee-eaters all work the shallows — so it pairs naturally with serious birdwatching in Nepal. Now and then a one-horned rhino or a herd of deer comes down to drink.

Best time and how it works

Go at dawn, when the river is misty, the air is cool and wildlife is most active; late afternoon is a good second choice. Many trips end with the canoe dropping you on the far bank to continue on foot with a guided jungle walk or a visit to the elephant breeding centre, then you walk or ride back to the village. A national park permit and licensed guide are required, both arranged by your lodge.

Good to know

  • Wear the life jacket provided and stay seated throughout.
  • Bring binoculars, a camera, sun protection and insect repellent.
  • Keep noise to a minimum — silence is what gets you close.
  • High water during the monsoon can suspend canoe trips, so check conditions.

The canoe trip is a cornerstone of the Chitwan safari from Sauraha collection and a relaxed counterpoint to the Chitwan jeep safari from Sauraha. See it among the village's other highlights in top things to do in Sauraha, and plan the rest from the Sauraha travel guide.
